The Direct Support Professional (DSP) at Stratton Road IRA in New Rochelle plays a crucial role in assisting individuals to maximize their strengths, interests, and abilities. This position involves upholding personal rights, providing emotional support, and building positive relationships with patience and tolerance. The DSP supports individuals in meeting personal goals, engages in respectful communication using person-first language, and encourages social engagement and community connections. Key responsibilities include ensuring the overall supervision, protection, and care of individuals, maintaining program guidelines, facilitating fire safety training, and identifying and escalating potential harm to self or others. The role also focuses on health, wellness, and safety through appropriate supervision and crisis management, adhering to all applicable policies and regulations. DSPs provide support in various settings, following individualized service and behavior support plans, and utilizing support skills for individuals with diverse needs, demonstrating OPWDD Core Competencies. They ensure the implementation of person-centered plans, including protective oversight (IPOPs), Behavior Support Plans (BSPs), Staff Action and/or Life Plans, understanding the intentions and goals of these plans. The position requires maintaining a clean, safe, and organized therapeutic environment, utilizing safe handling procedures, and implementing infection control protocols. Specific tasks include assisting with personal care and activities of daily living (ADLs), administering medication as prescribed, teaching skills, supporting person-centered advocacy, assisting with communication and dispute resolution, facilitating ethical decision-making, preparing meals in accordance with dietary needs, and transporting/escorting individuals to various appointments and activities. DSPs develop an understanding of specialized clinical knowledge for specific needs such as autism spectrum disorders and complex medical needs, and implement Behavior Support Plans as written by Behavior Intervention Specialists. They collect, record, and summarize data on observable behavior, and report any changes to the clinical and/or leadership team. Serving as a member of a highly effective team, DSPs provide feedback, communicate programmatic needs, and maintain a solution-oriented approach. They complete and maintain all necessary trainings and certifications, review communication logs daily, and make entries of events and progress notes using an electronic health record. Accurate and timely completion of all required paperwork and documentation, including incident reports and maintenance requests, is essential. DSPs use foundational teaching skills and understand behavior as communication, employing person-centered thinking to support positive interactions. They comply with all regulatory requirements, including HIPAA, and report maintenance and safety concerns. Consultation with program leadership and other staff ensures streamlined care, and active participation in team meetings is expected. DSPs utilize approved YAI and OPWDD training techniques for challenging behaviors, ensuring the safety of all. They may provide coverage at other locations and participate in the development of treatment plans. For certain assignments, operating a YAI vehicle to transport individuals may be required.
