Digital Twin Product Lead

TerraPower•Bellevue, WA

About The Position

TerraPower is seeking a Digital Twin Product Lead to define and guide the company’s digital twin strategy and own delivery of capabilities for its Natrium program. The role will establish a practical definition of a nuclear reactor digital twin, align teams across Design, Engineering, Construction, Operations, and Enterprise AI & IT, and connect the digital twin philosophy to TerraPower’s broader Digital Product and Enterprise AI goals. The Product Lead will develop enough understanding of relevant modeling, simulation, engineering, operational-data, and AI/ML technologies to frame decisions and evaluate trade-offs. They will distinguish products, platforms, and architecture when guiding investment and design, ensure solutions comply with data, security, export-control, and regulatory requirements, and prevent duplicated or unnecessary work. The role manages internal and external stakeholder relationships and takes end-to-end ownership of digital twin initiatives, including roadmaps, prioritization, success measures, delivery reporting, escalation, and stopping work that does not provide value.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in engineering, computer science, physics, or a related technical field, or equivalent experience.
  • At least 8 years of experience in technical product management, digital engineering, systems engineering, or technical program leadership.
  • At least 3 years leading digital twin, modeling and simulation, or comparable digital engineering initiatives.
  • Familiarity with analysis codes that a digital twin may need to wrap or validate against, including internally developed tools, DOE/INL’s MOOSE framework and NEAMS tools, GOTHIC, RELAP5-3D or TRACE, MELCOR, and MCNP or Serpent.
  • Demonstrated understanding of the differences among products, platforms, and architecture, and experience applying those distinctions to technology strategy and investment decisions.
  • Ability to understand complex design, engineering, and operational processes and workflows and translate them into prioritized use cases and requirements.
  • Track record of delivering technical capabilities through engineering teams and external partners without directly owning execution.
  • Ability to independently evaluate technical, resource, and capability trade-offs and make defensible decisions.
  • Excellent communication skills, including setting requirements and expectations for engineers and explaining trade-offs to non-technical stakeholders and executives.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience in nuclear, energy, aerospace, defense, or another highly regulated, engineering-intensive industry.
  • Familiarity with full-scope nuclear plant simulators.
  • Familiarity with nuclear design, licensing, and quality frameworks such as NRC regulations, 10 CFR 50 Appendix B, and NQA-1, including implications for engineering data and digital tools and support for verification and validation processes.
  • Experience with nuclear cybersecurity requirements such as 10 CFR 73.54 or NEI 08-09 in the United States.
  • Experience with engineering data management, PLM, configuration management, or systems engineering (MBSE) practices.
  • Understanding of how AI/ML and knowledge graphs can augment digital twins.
  • Experience establishing a new capability or discipline within an organization, including defining its vision, operating model, and governance.
  • Advanced degree in a relevant technical field.

Responsibilities

  • Define and communicate TerraPower’s digital twin philosophy, including what a nuclear reactor digital twin is and is not, how its forms relate, and the guiding principles and maturity model.
  • Build alignment across Design, Engineering, Construction, Operations, and Enterprise AI & IT around shared digital twin terminology and direction.
  • Serve as the authoritative voice on digital twin strategy, resolve competing interpretations, and connect the strategy to Digital Product and Enterprise AI goals.
  • Develop a working understanding of modeling and simulation, 3D/CAD and BIM environments, engineering data and configuration management, sensor and operational data, and AI/ML as applied to advanced nuclear.
  • Distinguish products, platforms, and architecture and use those distinctions to guide investment and design decisions.
  • Evaluate technical, resource, and capability trade-offs proposed by engineering teams and make or recommend clear decisions.
  • Keep projects focused on defined use cases, value, and boundaries, preventing distraction, gold-plating, and scope creep.
  • Partner with enterprise architecture, data management, and information security to ensure solutions meet data, security, export-control, and regulatory requirements.
  • Build relationships with internal stakeholders in Design, Engineering, and Operations, understanding their needs without becoming a pass-through for every request.
  • Manage third-party technology and services partners by setting expectations, scope, and success criteria.
  • Identify existing models, data, tools, and efforts before new work begins, preventing duplication and ensuring engagements deliver net value.
  • Own Natrium digital twin initiatives end to end, including initiating, scoping, prioritizing, progressing, and completing projects.
  • Maintain a prioritized digital twin roadmap and portfolio aligned with Digital Product goals and program milestones.
  • Define success measures, report progress, risks, and outcomes to leadership, make timely decisions, escalate when appropriate, and close or stop work that is not delivering value.
