About The Position

The Digital Production Group (DPG) at the University of Virginia Library provides a full suite of services to create, manage, deliver, and expand access to the University of Virginia's distinctive digital collections. The DPG's primary mission is to convert the Library's rare, medium rare and unique materials to digital formats which the U.Va. community can use to support research and instructional needs. This internship offers students the opportunity to photograph rare materials and circulating items that are considered 'medium rare' or are too fragile for circulation. Students will gain an understanding of the digital workflow of the unit, be exposed to a variety of rare and unique materials, and benefit from the mentoring of library staff. The position also includes participation in the structured Transformational Federal Work-Study (TWFS) Internship, which offers dedicated career support and skill development.

Requirements

• Federal work-study eligible students only
• Current undergrad UVA student.
• Resume and Cover Letter required.

Nice To Haves

• Experience or interest in photography.
• Experience or interest in library work.
• Experience or interest in cultural heritage materials.
• Experience with CaptureOne, Adobe Photoshop and the department's tracking system and project processing software.
• Experience with Phase One medium format cameras, large-format Cruse scanner, Atiz book scanners using Canon cameras, and Epson flatbed scanners.
• Opportunity to learn/use other professional cameras and tools for rare material work.

Responsibilities

• Photograph rare materials and circulating items that are considered 'medium rare' or are too fragile for circulation.
• Care and handling of rare and unique library materials (books, manuscripts, maps, photographs, negatives, etc.).
• Perform quality assurance tasks for their own work and the work of fellow employees.
• Gain an understanding of the digital workflow of the unit.
• Be exposed to a variety of rare and unique materials.
• Benefit from the mentoring of library staff.
• Participate in the structured Transformational Federal Work-Study (TWFS) Internship.
• Enroll in UNST 3910 (1 cr.) or a co-curricular workshop series through Canvas.
