About The Position

The Wall Street Journal is seeking experienced Digital Production Editors for its newly formed Digital Production Team, part of the New York publishing hub. The role combines rigorous copy editing with strategic digital programming and audience development. Editors are expected to be fully proficient in both areas from the outset. The team curates and publishes content across WSJ’s digital platforms, supports news editors, and shapes how journalism reaches and engages readers on phones and the web. The role calls for initiative, independent decision-making, strong attention to detail, visual storytelling awareness, and curiosity about technical innovation. It is based in the New York newsroom, with at least three days per week in the office. The schedule includes at least one weekend day and flexibility around evenings.

Requirements

  • At least 5 years of hands-on experience in digital news editing, platform curation, or a role requiring both, with demonstrated competency in copy editing and digital programming.
  • A record of strong, independent news judgment under deadline pressure.
  • Expert-level proficiency with digital publishing tools, metadata, and newsroom workflows.
  • Deep, applied knowledge of SEO best practices and audience data platforms, with the ability to use both in real time.
  • Experience curating digital homepages, app feeds, or equivalent native platform surfaces.
  • Fluency editing across media types, including text, graphics, captions, push copy, and social.
  • Ability to work independently and contribute effectively as part of a team.
  • Composure and flexibility in a fast-moving, high-stakes editorial environment.

Responsibilities

  • Edit copy quickly and on deadline to high standards of grammar, style, accuracy, and clarity, without a second pass.
  • Make independent packaging and presentation decisions across breaking news, features, and enterprise journalism.
  • Write sharp, on-brand, audience-aware headlines optimized for SEO and digital engagement, as well as captions, sells, and push alerts.
  • Make daily programming decisions across WSJ platforms, including app and desktop homepages, push notifications, and email alerts, using audience data to inform real-time curation.
  • Apply SEO principles across relevant fields, tags, and headline structures.
  • Craft display text for off-platform distribution, including Google, social platforms, and aggregators.
  • Apply metadata, in-house coding, and technical publishing requirements correctly and consistently.
  • Troubleshoot digital publishing issues, escalating when appropriate and resolving them when possible.
  • Coordinate with the London production hub to ensure publishing continuity across time zones.
  • Collaborate with reporters, coverage editors, and audience, strategy, and social teams on audience-first publishing.
  • Uphold Dow Jones standards and ethics in editorial decisions.

Benefits

  • Competitive and flexible compensation.
  • Comprehensive benefits package covering health, retirement, and wellbeing, with optional benefits.
