About The Position

The Digital Marketing and Communications Specialist is a key member of the Communications Team, responsible for enhancing Kansas City, Kansas Public Schools’ image and supporting its vision of becoming a top 10 school district. This role plans, executes, and analyzes multi-channel marketing campaigns, manages digital platforms, and ensures consistent, innovative, and data-driven communications across all audiences with a focus on both traditional and digital strategies, including website management. The Marketing Specialist works as part of the Communications Team to enhance Kansas City, Kansas Public School’s image and support its vision of becoming one of the top 10 school districts in the nation. This individual works closely with the Communications and Marketing team to plan and implement marketing campaigns.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Communications, Marketing or related field.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills.
  • Video and editing skills required.
  • Social Media experience required.
  • Experience with writing newsletters, marketing campaigns, advertising copy.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office software including Excel, PowerPoint and Word.
  • Experience managing website content and using web content management systems (CMS).
  • Ability to work in a high-stress environment while meeting multiple deadlines.
  • Strong organizational skills.
  • Ability to develop and maintain working relationships with all district staff, media personnel, district parents and students, community groups and organizations.
  • Ability to proofread prose and graphic materials, as well as, edit the written work of others.
  • Ability to use good judgement and maintain confidentiality when necessary.
  • Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists.
  • Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.
  • Ability to read and analyze and interpret general professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations.
  • Ability to write reports, correspondence, and protocols.
  • Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of administrators, staff, parents, students, and the general public.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, peers, parents, and community; ability to speak clearly and concisely in written or oral communication.

  • Experience in Adobe in Design, Photoshop and Lightroom software preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Brainstorm and develop ideas for creative marketing campaigns for district programs and services.
  • Collaborate with communications team members to coordinate brand awareness and marketing efforts.
  • Co-coordinate the school district’s “social media” sites including, but not limited to; Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and YouTube.
  • Analyze data to determine marketing campaign efficiency.
  • Ensure creative marketing materials undergo regular review and adhere to brand guidelines.
  • Co-coordinate internal and external electronic newsletters.
  • Contributes stories, as requested, for staff communications tools, including the Education Connection, Staff Notebook, etc.
  • Plan and execute initiatives to reach the target audience through appropriate channels (radio, billboards, social media, print advertising)
  • Provide marketing support to district-wide special events, including United Way, Superintendent’s Honor Roll, Reasons to Believe Celebration, Retirement Banquet, and Convocation.
  • Prepare marketing materials for district staff before publication, as needed.
  • Possesses basic design skills and the ability to conceptualize, develop, and produce designs that are reflective of the district brand standards. Products include, but are not limited to, fliers, advertisements, postcards, invitations, banners, brochures, and other communications resources as needed.
  • Support and collaborate with the Communications Team members, as needed, to complete school-wide initiatives.
  • Assist in the development of videotaping assignments, as assigned.

  • Develop, implement, and analyze creative, multi-channel marketing campaigns for district programs and initiatives, leveraging digital, print, and emerging platforms.
  • Collaborate with communications team members to coordinate brand awareness and marketing efforts, ensuring alignment with district goals and messaging.
  • Co-manage and create content for all district social media channels (e.g., Facebook, Instagram, X/Twitter, YouTube, LinkedIn, TikTok), including paid social campaigns, short-form video, and real-time engagement.
  • Monitor, analyze, and report on social media and digital campaign performance using analytics tools; recommend and implement strategies for growth and engagement.
  • Manage and update district website content, ensuring accuracy, accessibility (ADA compliance), and alignment with brand standards; collaborate with IT and Communications to implement improvements and new features.
  • Optimize website content for search engines (SEO) and monitor website analytics to inform content strategy and improve user experience.
  • Coordinate and design digital newsletters and email marketing campaigns; manage subscriber lists and analyze engagement metrics.
  • Create compelling written, visual, and video content tailored to diverse audiences, including students, families, staff, and the community.
  • Maintain and enforce brand guidelines across all digital and print materials.
  • Support and collaborate with the Communications Team on district-wide special events and initiatives.
  • Provide marketing support for internal and external communications, including crisis communications and rapid-response messaging.
  • Stay current on digital marketing trends, tools, and best practices; recommend and implement innovative strategies to enhance district communications.
  • Mentor and share expertise with team members, supporting specialization and professional growth within the team.
  • Manage and update district website content, ensuring accuracy, accessibility, and alignment with brand standards.
  • Monitor website traffic and user engagement using analytics tools, and recommend improvements based on the data.
  • Ensure the website is optimized for search engines (SEO).
  • Complete other duties as assigned.
