About The Position

The University of Maryland, Baltimore (UMB), Health Sciences and Human Services Library (HSHSL) has an opportunity for a contractual Digital Accessibility Assistant (IT Instructional Technology Assistant). The Digital Accessibility Specialist supports UMB’s efforts to ensure compliance with ADA Title II, Section 508, and WCAG 2.2 standards by assessing, improving, and advising on the accessibility of digital content, with a particular focus on library and scholarly resource environments. Housed within the HSHSL’s Resource Development & Access division, this position works with library staff and campus partners to improve the accessibility of digital collections, course materials, and resource sharing systems. The Specialist provides consultation, contributes to workflow development, and supports accessibility-related initiatives that help advance equitable access to information across the UMB community.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in field and/or related field, such as Graphic or Instructional Design.
  • Knowledge of position requirements.

Nice To Haves

  • Bachelor’s or master’s degree in library science, information science, communications, information technology, or a related field preferred.
  • Related professional experience in digital accessibility, digital content creation or remediation, library systems, or a related field preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct accessibility testing and evaluation of digital content using automated tools, manual review, and assistive technologies; document findings and recommend remediation approaches.
  • Remediate digital content for accessibility across formats (e.g., PDFs, Word documents, presentations, scanned materials, and multimedia) in alignment with WCAG 2.2, Section 508, and ADA Title II standards.
  • Support accessibility workflows for library and academic content environments, including digital collections, interlibrary loan, course reserves, and repository systems.
  • Provide technical support to library staff and campus partners on accessibility practices, tools, and standards.
  • Assist with the development and documentation of accessibility workflows, guides, and training materials to support consistent and sustainable practices.
  • Collaborate with campus partners (e.g., IT, Communications, Disability Services, instructional designers as appropriate) to help improve the accessibility of digital content.
  • Track and document accessibility issues and remediation activities, contributing to increased awareness of common barriers and improvement opportunities.
  • Review digital content and platforms for accessibility concerns and suggest practical recommendations for improvement.
  • Utilize accessibility tools and technologies (e.g., Adobe Acrobat Pro, accessibility checkers, captioning platforms) to support content evaluation and remediation.
  • Stay informed on evolving accessibility standards and best practices and apply this knowledge to ongoing work.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
