About The Position

This is a Relief Part Time opportunity for a Dietitian, Critical Care/Parenteral Nutrition at Surrey Memorial Hospital. The role involves providing nutrition services to patients requiring nutrition support, including parenteral nutrition. The dietitian will act as a resource for critical care and parenteral nutrition support, contribute to practice guidelines, and participate in quality improvement initiatives. Requirements

  • Bachelor of Science degree in Dietetics from a recognized educational institution, plus successful completion of an approved dietetic internship program.
  • Two (2) years' recent related clinical experience in a medical/surgical unit in a large acute-care facility including current certification in nutrition support (CNSC) from the National Board of Nutrition Support Certification (NBNSC), or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.
  • Current registration with the College of Health and Care Professionals of British Columbia and current certification for Restricted Activity A, B & C.
  • Demonstrated background knowledge in nutritional sciences, food preparation and nutrient composition.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of biochemistry, human metabolism and advanced nutrition support.
  • Demonstrated in-depth knowledge of critical care intervention, medication/nutrient interactions, enteral and parenteral support and relevant metabolic changes in response to disease/intervention.
  • Demonstrated in-depth knowledge of current practice in nutritional intervention in enteral and parenteral support.
  • Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing.
  • Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively and effectively within an interdisciplinary environment.
  • Ability to teach and counsel.
  • Ability to organize and prioritize workload.
  • Ability to operate related equipment including applicable software applications.
  • Physical ability to perform the duties of the position.

Responsibilities

  • Assesses the patient's nutritional needs by evaluating biochemical, anthropometric, dietary parameters and/or global assessment; develops and implements a comprehensive nutrition plan and makes recommendations regarding nutrient requirements, feeding choices and method of delivery including parenteral nutrition.
  • Monitors and evaluates nutrition plan by reviewing biochemical, anthropometric and dietary parameters; modifies, revises and/or recommends changes to the patient's nutrition plan in collaboration with the multidisciplinary team; consults with the physician and other health care professionals regarding patient response to nutrition care plans; communicates care plan to other health care providers, family and/or caregivers in the hospital or community including parenteral nutrition.
  • Participates in patient care rounds on assigned units and clinics by evaluating and reporting on aspects of the nutritional care plan; maintains and updates patient files and makes notes regarding recommendations or adjustments as per established guidelines.
  • Develops and provides individual and group teaching sessions for staff and caregivers regarding comprehensive nutrition and support; develops written educational material and related resources for the patient, family and/or caregivers including other health care professionals.
  • Educates the patient, patient's family and/or caregiver around nutritional issues such as eating habits, learning ability and cultural background.
  • Completes and maintains appropriate related records for activities performed such as documentation of nutritional care plan on patient charts, workload statistics, formula requisitions and patient menus as per established procedures.
  • Provides input to the Manager by participating in the development, implementation, evaluation and revision of nutrition practice guidelines, quality improvement initiatives and educational materials based on current evidence-based practice and literature research with a focus on parenteral nutrition.
  • Acts as a resource person to the multidisciplinary team and other health care professionals; provides orientation and in-service sessions as required; participates in student programs by providing education to the learning needs of others such as dietetic interns with a focus on parenteral nutrition.
  • Acts as a primary resource for critical care and/or parenteral nutrition for the designated area, in consultation with other critical care and/or parenteral dietitians from other facilities; participates in a leadership role for critical care and/or parenteral nutrition support within the Professional Practice Council.
  • Provides input on menu planning, recipe development, equipment/service selection process and enteral/parenteral formula selection process based on the requirements of the patient population.
  • Provides input to the Manager by participating, implementing and evaluating clinical research projects and surveys by identifying current trends in nutrition and nutrition support literature and collaborating with the multidisciplinary team to assess current research and share information from research findings.
