About The Position

The Diesel Technician is responsible for performing maintenance, diagnostics, inspections, and light repairs on company tractors and DOT 406/407 fuel tankers in the field. This role supports safe, compliant, and efficient fleet operations by ensuring equipment readiness, coordinating with third-party vendors, and responding to service needs across the assigned region. Occasional after-hours and weekend support is required.

Requirements

  • 5+ years of experience in heavy-duty truck and/or tanker maintenance.
  • Strong knowledge of diesel engines, braking systems, suspensions, and electrical systems.
  • Familiarity with DOT inspection requirements and preventive maintenance programs.
  • Ability to diagnose issues independently and make sound repair decisions in the field.
  • Experience working with third-party vendors and managing outsourced repairs.
  • Valid driver’s license required; CDL preferred or ability to obtain.
  • Strong troubleshooting and problem-solving skills.
  • High level of accountability and ability to work independently.
  • Effective communication and coordination skills.
  • Detail-oriented with strong documentation habits.
  • Commitment to safety and regulatory compliance.
  • Ability to prioritize tasks in a fast-paced environment.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with DOT 406/407 tankers preferred (inspections, testing, and compliance).
  • Tanker and/or hazmat endorsement preferred.
  • ASE certifications or equivalent technical training.
  • Experience with fleet maintenance software (e.g., VMRS coding, work order systems).
  • Previous experience in fuel hauling or tanker operations.

Responsibilities

  • Perform field-based diagnostics, repairs, and preventive maintenance on tractors and fuel tankers (DOT 406/407).
  • Conduct and document inspections, including DOT annual inspections, preventive maintenance (PMs), and safety checks.
  • Identify mechanical, electrical, and hydraulic issues and determine appropriate corrective actions.
  • Coordinate and oversee repairs with third-party vendors, ensuring quality, cost control, and timely completion.
  • Support breakdown response and emergency roadside service as needed.
  • Review repair estimates and provide recommendations for approval.
  • Ensure all work complies with DOT, FMCSA, EPA, and company safety standards.
  • Maintain accurate service records, inspection reports, and compliance documentation.
  • Communicate effectively with drivers, operations, and maintenance leadership regarding equipment status.
  • Assist in tracking recurring issues and recommending long-term solutions or spec improvements.
  • Support equipment audits, utilization reviews, and fleet condition assessments.
