About The Position

The Diesel and Construction Equipment Mechanic position with the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) offers a hands-on way to further enhance your mechanical abilities. This role allows you to work with many types of vehicles and equipment that keep transportation running smoothly. This role focuses on repairing, maintaining, and inspecting diesel-powered and construction equipment to ensure safe performance and long service life.

Requirements

• Successful completion of the commonwealth’s Diesel and Construction Equipment Mechanic Trainee program; or Two years of journey level mechanic experience in the diagnosis and repair of automobiles, heavy trucks, or construction equipment, which includes one year of experience in the diagnosis and repair of diesel vehicles or equipment; or An equivalent combination of experience and training.
• Possession of an active Pennsylvania Class A or B Commercial Driver's License with the Air Brake Restriction (L) and Manual Transmission Restriction (E) removed, or equivalent.
• Active Pennsylvania Class 1, Class 4, or Class 7 Inspection Mechanic Certification on the first day of employment.
• Possession of an active Medical Examiner’s Certificate in accordance with the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration Regulations on the first day of employment.
• Ability to perform essential job functions.
• Operation of vehicles or equipment with a manual transmission.
• Employees may be required to obtain and maintain CDL endorsements and certifications necessary to operate specific pieces of equipment.
• All employees must obtain an active certification issued by the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation in the operation of heavy trucks and loaders within the probationary period.
• Subject to Drug and Alcohol testing in accordance with Federal Regulations.

Responsibilities

• Repair engines, transmissions, brakes, clutches, shock absorbers, and electrical components on cars, trucks, tractors, and construction equipment
• Carry out diagnostics, tune-ups, tire changes, cleaning, servicing and routine adjustments to reduce wear and extend equipment life
• Perform official state safety and emissions inspections, complete paperwork, and road test vehicles to ensure compliance
• Identify mechanical problems using diagnostic tools and determine repair methods, procedures, parts, and tools needed
• Make routine field adjustments and minor repairs to support safe operation outside the garage
• Follow environmental protection requirements and participate in required training
