About The Position

The Diesel and Construction Equipment Mechanic position with the Department of Transportation is a great opportunity to support safe and reliable equipment operations. This role allows you to work with a wide range of vehicles and machinery used in daily maintenance work. You will complete repairs, inspections, and preventative maintenance that is essential in keeping our operations running smoothly. This position offers steady hands-on work and a chance to strengthen your mechanical skills.

Requirements

  • Successful completion of the commonwealth’s Diesel and Construction Equipment Mechanic Trainee program (Commonwealth job title or equivalent Federal Government job title, as determined by the Office of Administration); or Two years of journey level mechanic experience in the diagnosis and repair of automobiles, heavy trucks, or construction equipment, which includes one year of experience in the diagnosis and repair of diesel vehicles or equipment; or An equivalent combination of experience and training.
  • Possession of an active Class A or Class B Commercial Driver’s License.
  • Possession of an active Pennsylvania Class 7 Inspection Mechanic Certification on the first day of employment.
  • Possession of an active Tank Vehicle Endorsement (N) within the probationary period.
  • Possession of an active Medical Examiner’s Certificate in accordance with the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration Regulations.
  • Subject to Drug and Alcohol testing in accordance with Federal Regulations.
  • Must be able to perform essential job functions.

Responsibilities

  • Repair vehicles, trucks, tractors, and construction equipment used in maintenance operations
  • Carry out scheduled maintenance, diagnostics, and adjustments on engines and mechanical systems
  • Perform official state inspections and complete required documentation for assigned vehicles
  • Identify equipment issues using diagnostic tools and determine repair methods
  • Repair and maintain motorized hand equipment such as chain saws, compressors and trimmers
  • Maintain a clean work area and follow all safety procedures to protect self and coworkers
