The Diesel and Construction Equipment Mechanic position with the Department of Transportation offers a hands-on role that keeps essential equipment running smoothly. Requirements

  • Successful completion of the commonwealth’s Diesel and Construction Equipment Mechanic Trainee program (Commonwealth job title or equivalent Federal Government job title, as determined by the Office of Administration); or Two years of journey level mechanic experience in the diagnosis and repair of automobiles, heavy trucks, or construction equipment, which includes one year of experience in the diagnosis and repair of diesel vehicles or equipment; or An equivalent combination of experience and training.
  • Possession of an active Class A or Class B Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with the Air Brake restriction (L) and Manual Transmission restriction (E) removed, or equivalent.
  • Employees must obtain an active Tank Vehicle Endorsement (N) during the probationary period and continuously maintain it while employed in this job.
  • Operation of vehicles or equipment with a manual transmission.
  • Possession of an active Medical Examiner's Certificate in accordance with the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations.
  • Possession of a valid Pennsylvania Class 4 or 7 Inspection Mechanic Certification.
  • Subject to Drug and Alcohol testing in accordance with Federal Regulations.
  • Must be able to perform essential job functions.
  • Conditional offer of employment will require submission of criminal history reports.
  • Conditional offer of employment will require a drug screening.

Responsibilities

  • Repair and overhaul cars, trucks, tractors, and construction equipment components
  • Carry out diagnostics, tune-ups, system adjustments, and routine servicing
  • Perform safety and emissions inspections and complete required documentation
  • Identify mechanical problems and determine proper repair procedures and parts
  • Maintain a clean work area and follow procedures that reduce risks and prevent injuries
  • Make equipment adjustments, minor repairs, and cleaning to support safe operation
