As a Diesel and Construction Equipment Mechanic Trainee with the Department of Transportation, you will start a career path filled with learning, teamwork, and steady growth. This position supports the maintenance and repair of diesel and construction equipment through structured, on-the-job training. The role builds mechanical knowledge and practical skills needed to service vehicles and machinery safely and effectively.

Requirements

  • Two years as a Tradesman Helper (Commonwealth job title or equivalent Federal Government job title, as determined by the Office of Administration) working in the automotive field; or Graduation from a post-high school diesel technology curriculum of an accredited trade or technical school; or An equivalent combination of experience and training.
  • Possession of an active Pennsylvania Class A or B Commercial Driver Learner's Permit or License on the first day of employment with the Air Brake Restriction (L) and Manual Transmission Restriction (E) removed, or equivalent.
  • Possession of an active Medical Examiner’s Certificate in accordance with the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations on the first day of employment.
  • Ability to obtain a valid Pennsylvania Class 4 or 7 Inspection Mechanic Certification during the probationary period.
  • Ability to pass the Department of Transportation’s New Mechanic Training course during the probationary period.
  • Ability to obtain an active Tank Vehicle Endorsement (N) during the probationary period.
  • Ability to perform essential job functions.
  • Ability to operate vehicles or equipment with a manual transmission.

Responsibilities

  • Assist with repairing and overhauling vehicles and heavy machinery components
  • Participate in routine servicing, diagnostics, tune-ups, and system adjustments
  • Help complete safety and emissions inspections and related documentation
  • Use diagnostic tools to identify issues and recommend repair methods and parts
  • Maintain clean work areas, follow safety procedures, and support injury prevention measures
  • Perform basic adjustments, minor repairs, and cleaning that support safe operation
