Diagnostic System Engineer

Peraton•Woodbridge, NJ
•$135,000 - $216,000•Onsite

About The Position

This position supports the design, manufacture, testing, and operational phases of projects undertaken at Peraton Labs, Peraton’s research and development arm. The engineer works independently within a small multidisciplinary team and collaborates with engineering, scientific, and technical staff to analyze, design, prototype, test, mature, and manufacture complex diagnostic systems. The role involves modeling and designing systems that capture data about the phenomena being studied, assessing deviations and communicating them to project leadership with recommended actions, and evaluating experimental designs before, during, and after operations for fitness of intent. The engineer also assesses mature designs for manufacturability and develops tests to verify that manufactured systems meet requirements. The primary work location is a Peraton Labs facility in Woodbridge, New Jersey, with occasional travel required. The successful candidate is organized, detail-oriented, communicates effectively, and collaborates with technical staff. They evaluate concepts, models, designs, and diagnostic systems; coordinate procurement with vendors; consult subject matter experts; design and execute prototypes and laboratory tests; prepare technical documents and presentations; and summarize test outcomes for Peraton engineers and customers. The role also supports proposal responses for contract opportunities.

  • Experience with diagnostic control, processing, and simulation software such as Matlab, Simulink, and Labview.
  • U.S. citizenship.

Nice To Haves

  • Ability to analyze designs in modeling environments such as Zemax, 3DOptix, and MODTRAN.
  • Experience with automated control of optical systems operating in harsh environments such as nuclear, vacuum, and temperature extremes.
  • Familiarity with electrical and mechanical engineering aspects of diagnostic system design.
  • Understanding of complex magnetic systems and their effects on system components.
  • Ability to conduct a hazard analysis and document the results.

Responsibilities

  • Understand and evaluate concepts, models, designs, and existing diagnostic systems to support laboratory testing, prototype development, software simulation, manufacture, and validation.
  • Work with vendors to specify and procure custom and Commercial-Off-The-Shelf components, including incoherent light sources, lasers, detectors, filters, camera systems, and mechanical mounting components.
  • Engage subject matter experts to evaluate designs, tests, facilities, components, and related system items for fitness for use, design understanding, procedure efficacy, and test validity.
  • Design and execute prototyping and laboratory testing to validate designs and mature concepts.
  • Create, read, analyze, comprehend, and generate professional-quality documentation.
  • Prepare presentations, simulation summaries, analyses, and other materials for internal and external design, testing, and manufacturing reviews.
  • Propose and review test procedures for complex optical systems to verify design objectives, performance, and manufacturability.
  • Generate supporting documentation and reports describing the system under test, objectives, and results clearly and concisely.
