Diagnostic System Engineer

Peraton•Woodbridge, NJ

About The Position

The Diagnostic System Engineer will support the design, manufacture, testing, and operational phases of projects at Peraton Labs, Peraton’s research and development arm. The role works closely with a multidisciplinary team of engineering, scientific, and technical staff to develop novel solutions. The primary work location is a Peraton Labs facility in Woodbridge, New Jersey, with occasional travel. The successful candidate will work independently and collaboratively to analyze, design, prototype, test, mature, and manufacture complex diagnostic systems. This includes modeling and designing systems that capture data from key aspects of the phenomena being studied; evaluating experimental designs before, during, and after operations; assessing design fitness for purpose and manufacturability; and developing tests to verify and validate manufactured systems. The engineer will identify deviations, communicate them to project leadership, and recommend courses of action. The position also involves preparing professional technical documentation and presentations, summarizing test results for Peraton engineers and customers, and supporting proposal responses for contract opportunities.

  • Degree in Electrical Engineering or Computer Engineering.
  • Relevant professional experience: at least 8 years with a bachelor's degree, 6 years with a master's degree, or 3 years with a Ph.D.
  • Extensive professional experience working with and selecting appropriate detectors, coatings, and materials for diagnostic and data acquisition systems.
  • Extensive professional experience with laboratory measurement equipment, such as optical power meters (thermopiles), photodiodes, camera systems, oscilloscopes, waveform generators, and digital voltmeters.
  • Experience setting up and executing tests using equipment such as steering mirrors, beamsplitters, lenses, filters, collimators, diffusers, and detectors.
  • Experience drawing complete and representative models and experimental layouts.
  • Proficiency writing technical documentation in Microsoft Word and presenting it in Microsoft PowerPoint.
  • Experience with diagnostic control, processing, and simulation software tools such as MATLAB, Simulink, and LabVIEW.
  • U.S. citizenship.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a multidisciplinary team.
  • Strong organization, attention to detail, and communication skills.

Nice To Haves

  • Ability to analyze designs in modeling environments such as Zemax, 3DOptix, and MODTRAN.
  • Experience with automated control of optical systems operating under harsh environmental conditions, such as nuclear, vacuum, and temperature extremes.
  • Familiarity with electrical and mechanical engineering aspects of diagnostic system design.
  • Understanding of complex magnetic systems and their effects on system components.
  • Ability to conduct a hazard analysis and document the results.

Responsibilities

  • Understand and evaluate concepts, models, designs, and existing diagnostic systems to support lab testing, prototype development, software simulation, manufacture, and validation.
  • Interact with vendors to specify and procure custom and commercial off-the-shelf components, including incoherent light sources, lasers, detectors, filters, camera systems, and mechanical mounting components.
  • Engage subject matter experts to evaluate designs, tests, facilities, components, and related system items for fitness for use, design understanding, procedure efficacy, and test validity.
  • Design and execute prototyping and laboratory testing to validate designs and mature concepts.
  • Create, read, analyze, comprehend, and produce professional-quality documentation.
  • Prepare presentations, simulation summaries, analyses, and other materials for internal and external design, testing, and manufacturing reviews.
  • Propose and review test procedures for complex optical systems to verify design objectives, performance, and readiness for manufacture.
  • Generate concise, understandable supporting documentation and reports describing the system under test, objectives, and results.
  • Summarize and present test results for review by Peraton engineers and customers.
  • Support development of proposal responses for contract opportunities.
  • Identify deviations in system processes and communicate them to project leadership with timely, effective courses of action.
  • Evaluate experimental designs before, during, and after operations, including assessing fitness of intent and manufacturability.
  • Develop tests to verify and validate that manufactured articles meet requirements.
