Diagnostic System Test and Integration Engineer

Rivian and Volkswagen Group Technologies•Irvine, CA

About The Position

Rivian and Volkswagen Group Technologies is a joint venture focused on technology for electric vehicles, including operating systems, zonal controllers, cloud, and connectivity solutions. The Diagnostics Testing and Integration Team works to advance ZEV diagnostics testing and ensure robust testing before and after software merges. The Diagnostic System Test and Integration Engineer owns testing and integration of diagnostic software across vehicle subsystems, from simulation through testing on vehicles. The role includes developing requirements-traced test cases for onboard and enhanced diagnostics; creating and maintaining automated software-in-the-loop (SiL) and hardware-in-the-loop (HiL) tests; running development, regression, and production-verification tests; and planning vehicle-level testing. The engineer performs physical fault injection on benches and vehicles, investigates diagnostic issues with engineering and software teams, verifies fixes, and develops automation to streamline testing across environments.

Requirements

  • Bachelor of Science or Master of Science in Engineering, preferably Electrical, Mechanical, Mechatronics, or Software Engineering.
  • Proficiency in Python, including test automation with Pytest.
  • Familiarity with C and Git.
  • Ability to work hands-on with electromechanical vehicle systems and laboratory equipment such as multimeters, oscilloscopes, and breakout boxes.
  • Ability to troubleshoot and root-cause issues in complex systems.
  • Curiosity about how systems work and enthusiasm for test automation, including a drive to take system or software components apart to understand them.
  • Ability to prioritize and make decisions using a first-principles approach.
  • Ability to work with cross-functional teams, including external stakeholders, and communicate clear results.
  • Comfort working with AI-driven tools and their pace.

Nice To Haves

  • Prior electric vehicle experience.
  • Technical understanding of electric vehicle architecture.
  • Familiarity with Vector tools and vehicle communication protocols such as CAN, ETH, LIN, DoCAN, DoIP, and XCP.
  • Experience with HiL benches, vehicle testing, or fault injection.
  • Exposure to requirements management tools such as Flow.

Responsibilities

  • Define and document test cases traced to requirements across onboard diagnostics (OBD) and enhanced diagnostics, from subsystem to vehicle level and white-box to black-box testing.
  • Develop and maintain automated SiL and HiL test cases in Python and Pytest for feature development and regression testing.
  • Run tests at SiL, HiL, and vehicle levels during development, software release regression, and production verification, and participate in merge request reviews.
  • Plan and execute vehicle-level tests of onboard and enhanced diagnostic systems, including test drives, data logging, and analysis.
  • Design and perform physical fault injection on benches and vehicles, including open and short circuits, connector disconnects, and sensor and actuator faults, to validate fault detection, diagnostic trouble code setting, and system reactions.
  • Find, reproduce, and root-cause diagnostic issues with development engineers and software developers, and verify fixes.
  • Identify and build ways to automate and streamline testing across SiL, HiL, and vehicle environments.

Benefits

  • Competitive base salary.
  • Eligibility for the annual company performance bonus program for full-time positions; payments are discretionary and not guaranteed.
  • Eligibility for equity in the form of Restricted Stock Units (RSUs), subject to board approval, plan terms, and applicable vesting requirements.
  • Comprehensive benefits package for full-time employees, including health coverage, retirement savings, time off, and family planning programs; offerings vary by country.
