About The Position

The Diagnostic System Engineer supports the design, manufacture, testing, and operational phases of projects at Peraton Labs, Peraton’s research and development arm. Working independently within a small multidisciplinary team, the engineer collaborates with engineering, scientific, and technical staff to analyze, design, prototype, test, mature, and manufacture complex diagnostic systems. The role evaluates concepts, models, existing systems, and experimental designs to assess fitness for purpose, manufacturability, and readiness for verification and validation. It also involves identifying deviations, communicating them to project leadership, and proposing effective courses of action. The engineer will interact with vendors to specify and procure custom and commercial components, and work with subject matter experts to evaluate designs, tests, facilities, and system components. The role includes designing and executing prototypes and laboratory tests; developing and reviewing procedures for complex optical systems; preparing technical documentation, reports, presentations, and simulation summaries; and presenting test results to Peraton engineers and customers. The engineer may also support proposal responses for contract opportunities. The primary work location is a Peraton Labs facility in Woodbridge, New Jersey, with occasional travel required.

  • Familiarity with electrical and mechanical engineering aspects of diagnostic system design.
  • Understanding of complex magnetic systems and their effects on system components.
  • Ability to conduct a hazard analysis and document the results.

Responsibilities

  • Evaluate concepts, models, designs, and existing diagnostic systems to support laboratory testing, prototype development, software simulation, manufacture, and validation.
  • Specify and procure custom and Commercial-Off-The-Shelf components, including light sources, lasers, detectors, filters, camera systems, and mechanical mounting components.
  • Engage subject matter experts to evaluate designs, tests, facilities, components, and related system items for fitness for use, design understanding, procedure efficacy, and test validity.
  • Design and execute prototyping and laboratory tests to validate designs and mature concepts.
  • Create, read, analyze, and generate professional-quality technical documentation.
  • Prepare presentations, simulation summaries, analyses, and other materials for internal and external design, testing, and manufacturing reviews.
  • Propose and review test procedures for complex optical systems to verify design objectives, performance, and manufacturability.
  • Generate documentation and reports describing the system under test, objectives, and results.
  • Summarize and present test results to Peraton engineers and customers.
  • Support development of proposal responses for contract opportunities.
  • Identify deviations in analysis, design, testing, and manufacturing processes and communicate them to project leadership with recommended courses of action.
