Diagnostic System Engineer

Peraton•Woodbridge, NJ
•$112,000 - $179,000•Onsite

About The Position

This position supports the design, manufacture, testing, and operational phases of projects at Peraton Labs, Peraton’s research and development arm. The engineer works independently within a small multidisciplinary team and collaborates with engineering, scientific, and technical staff to analyze, design, prototype, test, mature, and manufacture complex diagnostic systems. The role involves modeling systems and capturing data about the phenomena under study, evaluating experimental designs and system fitness for purpose, identifying process deviations, and communicating findings and recommended actions to project leadership. It also includes assessing mature designs for manufacturability and developing tests to verify manufactured articles against requirements. The position is based primarily at a Peraton Labs facility in Woodbridge, New Jersey, with occasional travel. The successful candidate will evaluate concepts, models, designs, and existing systems; specify and procure components; design and conduct prototyping and laboratory tests; and develop and review test procedures for complex optical systems. The engineer will prepare professional documentation, presentations, simulations, analyses, and reports; present test results to Peraton engineers and customers; and support proposal responses for contract opportunities.

  • Ability to analyze designs in modeling environments such as Zemax, 3DOptix, and MODTRAN.
  • Experience with automated control of optical systems operating in harsh environmental conditions, such as nuclear, vacuum, and temperature extremes.
  • Familiarity with electrical and mechanical engineering aspects of diagnostic system design.
  • Understanding of complex magnetic systems and their effects on system components.
  • Ability to conduct a hazard analysis and document its results.

Responsibilities

  • Evaluate concepts, models, designs, and existing diagnostic systems for laboratory testing, prototype development, software simulation, manufacture, and validation.
  • Specify and procure custom and Commercial-Off-The-Shelf components, including light sources, lasers, detectors, filters, camera systems, and mechanical mounting components, through vendor interactions.
  • Engage subject matter experts to evaluate designs, tests, facilities, components, and related system items for fitness for use, design understanding, procedure efficacy, and test validity.
  • Design and execute prototyping and laboratory tests to validate designs and mature concepts.
  • Create, read, analyze, comprehend, and generate professional-quality documentation.
  • Prepare presentations, simulation summaries, analyses, and other materials for internal and external design, testing, and manufacturing reviews.
  • Propose and review test procedures for complex optical systems to verify design objectives, performance, and manufacturability.
  • Generate concise, understandable documentation and reports describing the system under test, objectives, and results.
  • Summarize and present test results for review by Peraton engineers and customers.
