About The Position

The Museum of Modern Art is seeking a Development Officer to manage events, revenue, and membership growth for The Black Arts Council (BAC), a key donor group. This role involves collaborating with various museum departments and leadership to foster appreciation for art and artists of the African diaspora, amplify Black perspectives, and achieve significant fundraising goals.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree and five or more years of progressively responsible experience in fundraising, membership, philanthropy, or equivalent.
  • Excellent interpersonal and written communication skills.
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Ability to work in a demanding, fast-paced environment and independently manage multiple projects at once.
  • Interest in and knowledge of contemporary art, museums, and the cultural ecosystem of New York City.
  • Proficiency in MS Office and Google workspace. Experience with CRM systems and Salesforce is a plus.
  • Facility to work with numbers, budgets and financial data.
  • Must be available to work evenings and weekends as required.

Responsibilities

  • Independently creates and manages annual program and processes for the BAC, a dues-paying donor group with a mission to foster greater appreciation for art and artists of the African diaspora and to amplify Black perspectives through the Museum's program and initiatives.
  • Crafts strategies to achieve annual membership revenue goals through independent cultivation and stewardship of a portfolio of 150+ donors, including key donors and MoMA Trustees. Drives membership growth through proactive recruitment and retention efforts.
  • Crafts strategies to achieve a seven-figure fundraising goal for the annual Black Arts Council benefit. Researches donors and sells event tickets and tables. Works closely with the Department of Special Events to coordinate advance aspects, including securing honorees, co-chairs, and performers.
  • In close coordination with MoMA and BAC leadership, solicits endowment funds from BAC members. Develops prospect lists and materials. Drives continued growth and stewardship of existing BAC endowments that generate crucial support for exhibitions, programs, and acquisitions of work by Black artists.
  • Manages relationships with BAC Co-Chairs and Executive Committee members, planning engaging meetings, and ensuring that a robust annual calendar of activities (20+ BAC events per year) within and outside the Museum furthers the BAC’s mission and financial goals. Displays professionalism in representing the Museum at external and art world events.
  • Conceptualizes, produces, and hosts BAC events throughout the year; oversees invitations, event production, and coordination with MoMA Security.
  • Manages BAC outreach strategy, including publication and dissemination of weekly newsletters.
  • Oversees membership processes, including gift acknowledgements; updates and maintains confidential records in the Museum’s CRM system; and ensures compliance with Museum accounting and audit policies.
  • Creates and manages the annual BAC expense budget. Processes invoices and tracks expenses.
  • Assists Human Resources in the selection process for the annual Black Arts Council-funded intern.
  • Performs any other duties reasonably related to the functions described above.
