Developer Experience Lead

Werfen•Bedford, MA

About The Position

The Developer Experience Lead is a highly experienced Software Engineer who provides technical leadership for developer experience, productivity, and engineering enablement across the R&D Software Engineering organization. Under minimal supervision, the role owns the architecture and implementation of shared capabilities that improve how engineers develop, build, test, release, and operate software, using software engineering, DevOps, automation, cloud, AI, and other technologies as appropriate. The role combines strategic leadership with hands-on work, leading high-complexity, cross-team initiatives and developing and maintaining production-quality tools, integrations, reusable workflows, and technical documentation. It establishes standards and controls for reliable use in a regulated environment and is accountable for measurable improvements in developer workflow efficiency, consistency, quality, and self-service adoption across the organization.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a related field, or equivalent demonstrated experience; management may substitute relevant work experience for a degree and/or make exceptions to the years-of-experience requirement.
  • Bachelor’s degree plus a minimum of 10 years of related software engineering experience, or Master’s degree plus a minimum of 8 years of related experience, or equivalent demonstrated experience.
  • Extensive hands-on experience leading high-complexity software engineering work and designing, implementing, testing, releasing, and maintaining shared developer workflows, tools, platforms, or integrations across teams.
  • Demonstrated experience with modern Developer Experience platforms, integrations and automations, KPIs and metrics, technical documentation, and production support.
  • Expert software engineering judgment and technical leadership, including the ability to work under minimal supervision, own high-complexity implementations, and provide direction across team boundaries.
  • Hands-on proficiency developing maintainable software, automation, tools, and integrations using appropriate programming and scripting languages, APIs, testing practices, and software design principles.
  • Ability to evaluate and operationalize automation technologies and frameworks, and develop tools and integrations that reduce developer friction, enable self-service, and improve engineering workflow consistency, scalability, and efficiency.
  • Ability to administer and integrate software engineering tools supporting configuration management, requirements management, defect management, code quality, testing, and release management.
  • Hands-on capability with cloud operations, RESTful APIs, third-party service integrations, service monitoring, operational telemetry, networks, and public key infrastructure.
  • Ability to establish standards, governance, guardrails, evaluation methods, feedback loops, observability, and outcome metrics for developer enablement and AI-assisted engineering capabilities.
  • Working knowledge of DevSecOps practices, vulnerability scanning, automated software bill of materials generation, static code analysis, test automation, and software delivery in SAFe or Agile environments.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication, collaboration, mentoring, influencing, and cross-functional leadership skills, including the ability to lead technical reviews and align stakeholders without direct supervisory authority.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience evaluating and operationalizing AI-assisted development capabilities.
  • Experience working in regulated or quality-controlled software delivery environments.
  • Hands-on capability with AWS cloud operations.
  • Ability to evaluate and operationalize AI frameworks, AI-assisted development tools, AI-native engineering systems, multi-agent orchestration, and agentic workflows.
  • Familiarity with IEC 62304, ISO 13485, or FDA guidance.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and maintain the developer experience technical roadmap and target architecture, driving improvements in developer productivity, workflow consistency, and engineering effectiveness.
  • Design and deliver developer experience platforms, workflows, automations, integrations, and self-service capabilities that reduce friction and improve software delivery efficiency; own their reliability and continuous improvement so they remain stable, supportable, secure, and fit for purpose.
  • Establish and maintain standard development workflows, reference implementations, engineering controls, and adoption guidance that improve consistency while satisfying applicable quality, cybersecurity, and regulatory requirements.
  • Lead evaluation, rollout, and adoption of modern technologies and methods that improve developer productivity, engineering effectiveness, and organizational capability.
  • Define and maintain developer experience metrics and feedback mechanisms to identify friction, guide priorities, and demonstrate the value of delivered improvements.
  • Provide technical leadership through architecture, design, code, test, and implementation reviews; resolve complex engineering problems and promote sound, reusable practices.
  • Lead complex, cross-functional engineering initiatives from definition through delivery, managing technical direction, dependencies, risks, and outcomes.
  • Mentor engineers and champion a culture of self-service, continuous improvement, experimentation, and shared learning across the software engineering organization.
  • Perform other duties and responsibilities as assigned.
