About The Position

Under the direction of the Shift Sergeant and Shift Lieutenant, this role performs a variety of work focused on the supervision of staff and inmates within a detention center. The primary responsibility is to enforce all Detention Center Policies, procedures, Director’s Directives, and other pass downs provided by senior officers. This position ensures that floor and pod officers are executing their assigned duties, maintaining the security, safety, health, and care of inmates. Tasks normally performed by a Detention Sergeant may also be assigned.

Requirements

High school graduate or equivalent.
At least one year of full-time work experience in a corrections or detention setting.
Ability to work with people and work under pressure.
Must be able to pass a written examination.
Must be able to pass an oral review.
Must have a valid Driver’s License.
Must be able to pass a background/drug test.
Skill to read, analyze and interpret law enforcement and judicial records, documents.
Skill to logically and effectively present information both orally and in writing.
Ability to respond to questions from supervisors, peers, professionals, inmates and the general public.
Knowledge of detention operations, services and activities of adult detention standards, policies and procedures, and comprehensive detention programs.
Knowledge of laws, regulations and procedures applicable to the operation of holding facilities and victim's rights.
Knowledge of AFIS, and Offender Management Systems.
Knowledge of Federal, State, and local law enforcement agencies, their functions, jurisdiction, and procedural and operational relationship to detention.
Knowledge of budget principles and practices.
Knowledge of modern supervisory, training and evaluation methods, theories, and practices.
Knowledge of investigative procedures.
Knowledge of computer equipment and software for spreadsheets and databases: statistical analysis, reach methods and report presentation.
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships.
Ability to analyze problems, identify appropriate solutions and project consequences of proposed actions.
Ability to provide implementation in support of goals.
Ability to make sound judgments and use discretion in applying and interpreting policies and procedures and in planning, assigning, directing, and evaluating the work of employees.

Ability to provide leadership and manage and supervise a 24-hour holding facility.

Ability to use sufficient physical force when required.

Responsibilities

Facilitate all duties under Direct Supervision protocols.
Assist in supervising detention personnel on assigned shift.
Supervise and maintain the security and safety of the jail.
Supervise the booking and release of inmates.
Supervise inmate work details and provide supervision during meals.
Conduct cell searches and head counts.
Transport and escort inmates.
Facilitate the movement of inmates throughout the facility.
Oversee training officers on job duties.
Ensure all work is completed appropriately and safely.
Perform employee evaluations.
Recommend disciplinary action to the Shift Sergeant.
Supervise and monitor work duties for areas of responsibility and/or assignment.
Conduct briefings with staff.
Address operational issues in areas of responsibility and/or assignment.
Supervise and monitor assigned floor staff.
Train, motivate, and evaluate personnel.
Recommend training to the shift Sergeant.
Work with employees to correct deficiencies.
Administer first aid when necessary and refer detainees to medical staff.
Process and administer all inmate requests and grievances.
Review all facility admittances, releases, and incident reports from assigned staff for accuracy, completeness, proper grammar, punctuation, and spelling.
Conduct investigations and facilitate the disciplinary process of inmate rule violations.
Complete reports and perform other duties as assigned by the Shift Sergeant.
Supervise and monitor and patrol security of designated areas of the facility and control traffic to and from specific areas.
Report and document any unusual conditions of potential disorder.
Perform counts according to policy and directives.
Instruct in-service training and education of staff as assigned by training Sergeant.
