About The Position

The primary purpose of this job is to maintain order and supervise inmates in the Athens-Clarke County Correctional Institution, Food Service Center, or Diversion Center. Duties and Responsibilities include: insuring inmate count of the institution is maintained, supervising inmate visitation, maintaining facility security, coordinating the placement of inmates on outside work details, performing regular inspections of the facility, ensuring the institution is clean and sanitary, ensuring tools and chemicals are properly controlled, providing leadership and supervision over inmates, reacting quickly and effectively to situations jeopardizing the health and safety of others, and performing other duties as assigned. This position is designated as an emergency position that requires attendance at work under all types of emergency conditions, such as inclement weather, utility failure, fire, or other forced evacuations as determined by the Manager. Applicants with qualified certified BCOT prior experience may be eligible for higher placement/salary in the step plan. This position offers a one-time $3,000 hiring incentive to be paid in $1,000 increments upon documented satisfactory job performance at 3, 6, and 12 months of employment. Continuation of this incentive program is subject to available funding and approval by the Manager.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or equivalent required; or any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience which provides the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities for this position.
  • Requires ability to meet current certification requirements set forth in the Georgia Basic Correctional Officer Training program and obtain BCOT Certification in Corrections within twelve months of hire date.
  • Must possess a valid driver's license.
  • Two years as a BCOT certified Correctional Officer (for Corporal candidates).
  • Must be able to receive a certificate of Appointment of Notary Public (depending on area of assignment) (for Corporal candidates).
  • Must have P.O.S.T. Certification in Corrections and be in good standing (for Corporal candidates).
  • Knowledge of the policies, procedures, and activities of the Corrections Department as they pertain to the performance of duties relating to the position of Correctional Officer I.
  • Knowledge of the terminology used within the department.
  • Knowledge of federal, state and local laws and/or ordinances related to the incarnation of persons.
  • Knowledge of modern corrections procedures, first aid and CPR.
  • Knowledge of defensive tactics to protect self and other; proper arrest and suspect apprehension techniques.
  • Ability to interact with individuals that may have mental health conditions that influence cognitive abilities, and must be able to deal with individuals and stress in an environment that may result in chasing and subduing a suspect resisting arrest.
  • Ability to respond quickly and logically in emergency or stress situations.
  • Ability to understand the special problems of and deal humanely with individuals in confinement.
  • Ability to foster a team environment by supporting cohesive work relationships and providing effective conflict resolution.

  • Requires the ability to lift, push, bend and pull objects or materials using body parts as the position necessitates.
  • Requires skilled movements coordinating eyes, hands and fingers accurately and making precise movements with speed.
  • Requires the ability to handle a variety of items such as a two-way radio, van, firearm, handcuffs and telephones.
  • Must have the ability to use one hand for twisting or turning motion while coordinating other hand with different activities.
  • Must have minimal levels of eye/hand/foot coordination.
  • Position requires binocular vision with good depth perception and peripheral vision, motion detection, high acuity, and light adaptation, as well as the ability to differentiate between colors and shades of color.
  • Requires the ability to deal with people beyond giving and instructions.
  • Must be adaptable to performing under considerable stress when confronted with an emergency.
  • Must be able to communicate via telephone, two-way radio.

Nice To Haves

  • One year of correctional officer experience preferred.
  • Associate's Degree in Criminal Justice or related field of study preferred (for Corporal candidates).

Responsibilities

  • Insure inmate count of the institution is maintained.

  • Assists in shakedown and head count process as necessary; ensures all gates; doors, rooms, etc. are locked and secure as schedule dictates.
  • Monitors telephone, radio and intercom, as needed.
  • Monitors inmates in isolation segregation and sick room.
  • Fills in for other employees in their absence which may include assuming duties of shift supervisor, as necessary.
  • Serves on disciplinary committee.
  • Provides processing of new inmates and outbound processing.
  • Directs the unloading of and inspects food and supplies delivered to the facility (when assigned to Food Service Division).
  • Ensures correct inventory (when assigned to Food Service Division).
  • Observes facility to prohibit contraband from entering (when assigned to Food Service Division).
  • Assists in organizing inmate work in the Food Service operational areas (when assigned to Food Service Division).
  • Fills in for other employees in their absence or when needed, which may include assuming duties of Assistant Food Service Coordinator or Security Operations, as necessary (when assigned to Food Service Division).
  • Monitors and assists with inmate activities and controls inmate traffic between activities in the Diversion Center (when assigned to Diversion Center).
  • Processes new inmates and those that are being processed out of the facility (when assigned to Diversion Center).
  • Transports inmates both within and outside of the Diversion Center, as needed (when assigned to Diversion Center).
  • Assists in shakedown and head count process (when assigned to Diversion Center).
  • Ensures all gates, doors, rooms, etc. are locked and secure as schedule dictates (when assigned to Diversion Center).
  • Monitors telephone, radio and intercom (when assigned to Diversion Center).
  • Fills in for other employees in their absence which may include assuming duties of shift supervisor, as necessary (when assigned to Diversion Center).
  • May serve on disciplinary committee (when assigned to Diversion Center).
  • Receipts and codes daily monies; balances deposits with receipts (when assigned to Diversion Center).
  • Provides ordinance and guideline information to the general public (when assigned to Diversion Center).
  • Enters data and edits and balances daily, monthly, and year-end reports (when assigned to Diversion Center).
  • Assists with monitoring accounts payable budget expenditures (when assigned to Diversion Center).
  • Processes refund check requests/cash bonds; maintains related records (when assigned to Diversion Center).
  • Maintains vendor master file; inputs vendor information and changes to the system (when assigned to Diversion Center).
  • Maintains returned check system, including data entry and preparing related correspondence (when assigned to Diversion Center).
  • Balances daily receipts to cash; prepares bank account deposits (when assigned to Diversion Center).
  • Assists internal and external auditors with account information for audits (when assigned to Diversion Center).
  • Responds to and assists with inquiries from businesses, citizens, vendors, and user departments (when assigned to Diversion Center).
  • Performs a variety of clerical duties: answers the telephone, copies documents, types reports, maintains files, faxes documents, picks up and distributes mail, etc. (when assigned to Diversion Center).
  • Performs other related duties as required (when assigned to Diversion Center).
