About The Position

Under the direction of the Police Sergeant and with the assistance of the Patrol Section Lieutenant and Captain, the Corporal provides supervision of Public Safety Personnel in the protection of lives and property, enforcement of applicable State and Municipal laws, and University rules and regulations. Work involves performance of personnel assignments as well as supervision of the shift. Work is performed within established policies and procedures and according to Department regulations. The position of Corporal, by definition, includes the role and function of a police supervisor in addition to all duties and responsibilities of an officer and guard assigned to the Patrol Section. The Corporal is responsible for maintaining order within the ranks, and will require that they enforce the Department’s rules and regulations, as well as report infractions or violations of those rules or regulations. As appropriate, Corporals will continue to provide coaching and counseling to maintain order, and enforce discipline, prior to reporting to management. The Corporal is directly responsible to the Sergeant for all activities of the shift to which they are assigned, and will respect the chain of command at all times. Within the limitations of authority established by the Chief of Police, the Corporal exercises a degree of initiative and independence in carrying out their duties.

Requirements

A minimum of 2 years of police work experience with Duquesne University; or more than 2 years of police work experience in a law enforcement agency having 10 or more sworn officers plus 1 year of service with a university; or a combination of 3 years internal and external experience with 1 year of service with a university or municipal police agency.
Successful completion of the Pennsylvania Municipal Training Act 120;
Considerable knowledge of state and local laws and university rules and regulations;

Nice To Haves

An Associate’s degree (or proof of current enrollment with the completion of at least 45 credit hours) is preferred.
Alternately, the successful candidate may possess any equivalent combination of experience and training, which provides the knowledge, skills and abilities required to perform the essential job functions.
No sustained Departmental disciplinary action which resulted in a suspension or any letters of reprimand within the last two years.
Knowledge of supervision practices and techniques;
Effective written and oral communication skills;
Ability to interact with students, faculty, staff, and visitors in a firm but tactful manner recognizing the unique needs of a university community and the special mission of the University Public Safety Department.
Demonstrate successful leadership ability.
Ability to assist in personnel issues.
Willingness to be actively involved in the process of evaluations.
Ability to initiate and follow through with work responsibilities and to meet deadlines.
As per the collective bargaining agreement that this position is represented by, the successful candidate if hired from outside of Duquesne University will serve a 1-year probation period from the date of hire.

Responsibilities

The Corporal is generally a road patrol supervisor for their assigned shift but in the absence of the Shift Sergeant, the Corporal will assume the responsibility as the Shift Commander.
It shall be the Corporal’s responsibility to run the shift in the Sergeant’s absence as close as possible to the same set of rules, expectations and guidance as established by the Shift Sergeant.
The Corporal will assist the Sergeant by providing input into the annual Department Performance Appraisals for the officers of their shift.
Supervises uniformed and support staff in shift work and special details.
Responsible for assigning work, assuring completion and accuracy of work and providing feedback to officers and guards.
Conducts roll call briefings; inspects outgoing officers and guards and their equipment daily to ensure high standards of personal appearance and safety; communicates all orders and necessary information.
Completes all reporting requirements and ensures accurate and complete preparation and submission of reports by on-duty personnel.
Directs crime prevention and community outreach activities.
Responds immediately to all emergencies and incidents of a serious nature to provide direction, guidance and assistance to patrol personnel.
Supervises and actively handles parking enforcement and traffic control.
Maintains knowledge in the operation of the Universities Emergency Action Plan and the DU emergency alert system.
Maintains working knowledge of all security systems used at Duquesne University.
Enforces current PA state laws, codes and regulations.
Prepares for and testifies in court proceedings generated from enforcement.
Complies with the DU Department of Public Safety policies and ensures compliance with agency policy, legal requirements, and accreditation standards.
Adheres to the current acceptable practices and procedures in police and investigative work.
Completes other duties as assigned.
