About The Position

Velan Studios is seeking an experienced designer to work on a new racing concept. The designer will take features from concept through launch, working closely with art, engineering, and audio to ensure that the pieces fit together. The role focuses on creating high-speed racing with highly responsive vehicle handling.

This is a hybrid or onsite position based in the Troy, New York, or Toronto, Ontario studios. The hybrid schedule is three days per week in the studio: Tuesday, Wednesday, and Friday.

Requirements

• At least 5 years of design experience.
• At least one shipped title.
• Ability to lead a small cross-discipline sub-team on a mid- or large-size development project.
• General scripting proficiency.
• Strong cross-disciplinary communication skills.

Nice To Haves

• Experience with vehicle-based racing.
• Experience in level design.
• Experience with quick initial gameplay prototyping to prove or disprove a direction.

Responsibilities

• Work as a team lead with the Game Director and other designers to shape and implement key gameplay features.
• Prototype, design, and implement game-level content throughout the product life cycle.
• Prototype and develop vehicle-based racing mechanics in collaboration with programming teams.
• Prototype and develop racecourse elements, including obstacles and power-up types.
• Act as product owner for a cross-discipline sub-team delivering novel, high-quality content.
• Collaborate closely with artists, animators, audio designers, and gameplay programmers.
