Unlicensed Design Professional that supports development of design and documentation. At the Design Technician I level, the individual begins to assume some individual responsibility for producing portions of design and documentation. This role requires an individual who exercises independent judgment in evaluation, selection, and use of standard techniques, solves problems when encountered, and receives guidance on complex projects. The Design Technician I demonstrates working knowledge of conceptual, schematic, design development, construction documentation, and construction administration phases on assigned projects. They maintain and initiate frequent communication with JCJ team members to sustain proper information flow and fully participate in designated project meetings, both virtual and in-person. The role involves developing proficiency in written communication via email and virtual communication software, preparing meeting notes, and maintaining an ongoing vigilance about self-checking work and conveying questions or concerns to Project team leadership. Adherence to established project schedules and JCJ established conventions for digital file keeping is essential. The Design Technician I coordinates work with internal JCJ project team and sub-consultants, participates in the preparation and delivery of presentations to clients, and further refines a portfolio in one market sector. Demonstrates knowledge of time management skills required to work on multiple projects of all sizes. The role also involves creativity in design, the ability to adapt design solutions, and understanding the architectural design approach. Implementation of design direction cognizant of construction methods and coordination with engineering disciplines is key. A working knowledge of space planning conventions, including proper/legal clearances, human scale and ergonomics, functional organization, and three-dimensional implications of planning is required. The Design Technician I assists with development of design solutions, selects and presents multiple schemes, and demonstrates a working knowledge of the application of function, price points, lead times, and durability of products and systems. Facile computer-aided visualization skills via multiple software applications are necessary to support development and presentation of design concepts, with the ability to share knowledge of these applications with team members. Researching manufacturers and selecting appropriate construction materials, systems, and assemblies from the viewpoint of function, client preference, aesthetics, and cost is also part of the role. Supports business development activities by creating presentation collateral, which may require coordination with JCJ’s business development and marketing teams. The Design Technician I produces building project documentation from concept through construction documents, obtains and assembles data to complete drawings, and creates schedules and details for partition types and doors. They create detail drawings for floor, wall, and roof assemblies, developing awareness and application of industry construction best practices, and remaining current with JCJ Technical Bulletins. Production of construction documents under the direction of the Project Architect, utilizing architectural graphic conventions, is required. Adherence to JCJ conventions for Revit/AutoCAD standards, file and drawing organization is essential. Site observation, including photographic and dimensional notes to document existing conditions, is performed. Knowledge about Building, ADA, and Life/Fire safety codes, their industry-wide applications, and impact upon space planning is necessary. Preparation of Code Survey and Code Drawings for projects is required, notifying team members of possible conflicts between design and code. Understanding local zoning review and approval processes to assist the PM in all necessary work for compliance is also part of the role. The Design Technician I actively maintains resource materials and data bases in physical and digital libraries, demonstrates and refines knowledge of Materials, Systems, and Equipment costs, and understands manufacturers’ specifications and the creation of Project Specifications. Accurate performance of numeric tasks such as square footage calculations, device counts, and material quantity take-offs for budgeting purposes is required. Development of the ability to make financial recommendations to clients and implementation of cost management strategies at the direction of Senior Leadership are also key responsibilities. Active participation in value engineering exercises, answering RFIs and coordinating responses, reviewing shop drawings and submittals using JCJ software, and attending regular construction phase meetings are part of the Construction Administration duties. The role may also assume special projects and duties as assigned or required.
