About The Position

Design Engineer I assists in the engineering and design of mechanical, electrical, and plumbing (MEP) systems for multi-family new construction projects. Working under the guidance of senior designers, this position contributes to the preparation of design drawings, calculations, and construction documents while learning to apply building codes, engineering principles, and sustainable design practices. This role offers a structured path for career growth toward senior design engineering and professional licensure.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Architectural Engineering, or a related discipline.
  • 0–3 years of experience in MEP design or building systems engineering (internship or co-op experience acceptable).
  • Basic understanding of HVAC, plumbing, and electrical systems in building design.
  • Proficiency with AutoCAD required.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to read and interpret architectural and engineering drawings.
  • Excellent organizational, written, and verbal communication skills.
  • Self-motivated with a desire to learn and grow in a collaborative team environment.
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, Outlook).

Nice To Haves

  • EIT certification or progress toward obtaining one is preferred.
  • familiarity with Revit/BIM software preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Support the design of plumbing, HVAC, and electrical systems for multi-family residential buildings from schematic design through construction documents.
  • Perform basic engineering calculations, including heating/cooling loads, ventilation rates, equipment selection, circuiting, and pipe/duct sizing under supervision.
  • Develop and update AutoCAD and Revit models for MEP systems in coordination with architectural and structural models.
  • Prepare and organize drawings, specifications, and documentation in compliance with company standards and applicable codes.
  • Coordinate with architects, structural engineers, contractors, and other design disciplines to ensure system integration and constructability.
  • Participate in project coordination and design review meetings.
  • Research materials, equipment, and systems to support design decisions.
  • Assist with reviewing shop drawings and submittals and provide engineering support during construction administration.
  • Learn and apply relevant codes and standards, including CPC, CMC, NEC, ASHRAE, ASPE, IECC, NFPA, ADA, and local building codes.
  • Maintain awareness of energy efficiency, sustainability, and building performance standards.
