About The Position

The Sandberg Goldberg Bernthal Family Foundation (SGBFF) works to build a more equal and resilient world through initiatives like LeanIn.Org, LeanInGirls.Org, OptionB.Org, and the Dave Goldberg Scholarship Program. They aim to help women and allies build skills, confidence, and networks to reach their full potential. The Design Engineer role is a hybrid position responsible for both designing and building user experiences. This role involves owning the entire product lifecycle from research and design to coding the implementation. The position offers autonomy, direct influence on user experiences, and opportunities for growth within the team and platforms.

Requirements

  • 3+ years of experience spanning both design and engineering, or deep expertise in one with demonstrated ability in the other.
  • A portfolio showcasing user-centered thinking and strong execution.
  • Expert proficiency in Figma, including components, variants, auto-layout, and design systems.
  • Strong front-end skills, including modern JavaScript frameworks, HTML5, and CSS3.
  • Working back-end proficiency (e.g., Python, Node.js, Ruby, Java) and experience building RESTful APIs.
  • A strong foundation in interaction design, visual design, and information architecture.
  • Deep understanding of responsive design, accessibility standards, and inclusive design principles.
  • Fluency with or strong curiosity about AI-assisted design and development tools.
  • Ability to work autonomously and drive projects forward with minimal direction.
  • Strong communication and presentation skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively within a small team.
  • A bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Design, a related field, or equivalent practical experience.
  • A deep commitment to Lean In's mission to inspire and equip women to lead.
  • Alignment with the Sandberg Bernthal Family Foundation's initiatives, including building resilience and driving social impact.

Responsibilities

  • Lead the end-to-end design process including research, concept development, and prototyping for web and mobile applications.
  • Build and maintain design systems and patterns for consistency and scalability across products.
  • Identify opportunities to improve user experience and proactively propose solutions.
  • Take features from initial design concepts through to production release.
  • Develop responsive and accessible front-end experiences using modern JavaScript frameworks.
  • Write clean, maintainable, and well-tested code, and perform debugging across the full stack.
  • Collaborate with product, data, and leadership teams to translate user needs into functional solutions.
  • Optimize performance, accessibility, and security for all developed features.
  • Contribute to shaping engineering and design standards as the team expands.
