About The Position

Morton Industries is hiring for a Design Engineer! Morton offers: Low Insurance Premiums on Medical, Dental, and Vision Short Term and Long-Term Disability Hospital, Critical Illness, and Accident Coverages Paid Time Off Paid Holidays Company Paid Life Insurance 401K Match Paid Bereavement SUMMARY As the Manufacturing Design Engineer, you convert preliminary CAD models into production‑ready designs, rigorously verifying that each part can be built repeatably using our chosen processes, and deliver complete, unambiguous detailed prints to the shop floor and suppliers.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's in engineering, Design, or equivalent.
  • 3+ years’ experience in a manufacturing environment.
  • High level of proficiency using spreadsheet applications such as Excel, including the use of pivot.

Nice To Haves

  • Multi-plant is a plus.
  • Experience with a manufacturing ERP software.

Responsibilities

  • Receive native 3‑D part and assembly files from Product Development, confirm file integrity and assembly constraints.
  • Check sheet‑metal gauge limits, bend radii, punch‑edge distances, weld access, tool clearances, minimum feature sizes, and tolerance stack‑ups against shop capabilities.
  • Modify geometry for laser‑/plasma‑cutting, press brake forming, CNC tube bending, MIG/TIG welding, and post‑processing (e.g., powder‑coat) to achieve cost, strength, and aesthetic targets.
  • Assign datums, positional tolerances, flatness and perpendicularity call‑outs, and AWS‑compliant weld symbols that clearly define quality expectations for fabrication and inspection.
  • Create unfolded 2‑D flat patterns with bend lines and K‑factors; export DXF/STEP files and nesting reports for cutting programs.
  • Publish fully dimensioned drawings including material specs, hardware call‑outs, surface‑finish requirements, and revision blocks that serve as the single source of truth for the shop and suppliers.
  • Lead print reviews with press‑brake operators, welders, and inspectors; incorporate feedback from prototypes, first‑article inspections, and in‑field fit checks.
  • Investigate non‑conformances (e.g., mis‑alignments, warpage, hole location drift), update prints or models, and issue Engineering Changes as required.
  • Identify opportunities for part consolidation, gauge optimization, standard hardware usage, and automation‑friendly features to lower total landed cost and improve throughput.
  • All other duties as assigned.
