About The Position

The Design Engineer plays a critical role in transforming virtual design concepts into fully engineered, constructable solutions. This position leads preconstruction design, engineering analysis, and BIM coordination while ensuring accuracy, constructability, and code compliance across projects. As part of Gaylor Electric’s Production Innovation Center, this role also supports the design and continuous improvement of modular electric room skid solutions—bridging engineering, manufacturing, and field operations. The Design Engineer drives fabrication-ready design, collaborates with production teams, and integrates real-world feedback into scalable, repeatable solutions. A successful candidate brings strong technical expertise, a proactive mindset, and the ability to lead design efforts while collaborating across disciplines in a fast-paced environment.

Requirements

  • 2+ years of experience in a VDC, design engineering, or related role
  • Strong proficiency in Revit and experience with BIM coordination
  • Experience with Autodesk tools (Revit, Navisworks, BIM 360, Autodesk Construction Cloud/Forma)
  • Ability to develop and interpret electrical drawings, one-line diagrams, and panel schedules
  • Strong understanding of electrical systems, installation practices, and constructability
  • Ability to interpret engineering drawings, schematics, and technical specifications
  • Working knowledge of NEC
  • Familiarity with IBC, IECC, and life safety codes
  • Experience producing code-compliant, buildable designs
  • Strong attention to detail and technical accuracy
  • Effective communication and cross-functional collaboration skills
  • Ability to manage multiple projects and priorities in a fast-paced environment
  • Proactive, solutions-oriented mindset with a focus on continuous improvement
  • High School Diploma or GED required

Nice To Haves

  • 5+ years of electrical design or construction experience
  • Experience in modular construction, prefabrication, or skid-based system design
  • Familiarity with electrical room layouts, switchgear, MCCs, and related equipment
  • Background as an MEP Coordinator, Superintendent, or field leader with an electrical contractor
  • Knowledge of manufacturing or fabrication workflows
  • Experience with revision control systems (PDM/PLM tools)
  • Active Journeyman’s License (where applicable)
  • Bachelor’s degree in Construction Management, Engineering, or related field preferred (or equivalent experience)
  • Revit Certification or equivalent professional experience preferred

Responsibilities

  • Lead projects through preconstruction design, engineering, and coordination phases
  • Develop and review design, coordination, and installation drawings aligned with Gaylor Electric Best Practices
  • Produce fabrication-ready documentation, including layouts, one-line diagrams, wiring diagrams, equipment placement, and system details
  • Perform and evaluate electrical calculations (load, voltage drop, short circuit, lighting, etc.)
  • Ensure all designs are constructable, code-compliant, and aligned with project specifications
  • Interpret and develop drawings for power, lighting, systems, underground, site, and temporary power
  • Develop and manage 3D models using Revit and BIM tools
  • Lead and participate in BIM coordination meetings with architects, engineers, and trade partners
  • Identify and resolve spatial, constructability, and installation challenges through 3D coordination
  • Review BIM Execution Plans, specifications, and jurisdictional requirements for compliance
  • Support the design and development of modular electric room skid solutions
  • Partner with manufacturing teams to clarify design intent and resolve drawing-related questions in real time
  • Provide timely updates and revisions to support efficient production workflows
  • Participate in design reviews with engineering, project management, and production teams
  • Ensure designs are optimized for manufacturability, assembly, and field installation
  • Collect and incorporate feedback from production and field teams to improve design efficiency and constructability
  • Drive continuous improvement of skid designs through lessons learned and design optimization
  • Support development of standardized templates, component libraries, and repeatable configurations
  • Implement and refine best practices to improve quality, consistency, and cycle time
  • Provide design and BIM support to operations, project management, estimating, and field teams
  • Coordinate with procurement and vendors to ensure equipment and design alignment
  • Interface with clients, consultants, and partners to resolve technical challenges
  • Communicate design changes clearly and proactively across all stakeholders
  • Mentor and support Virtual Design team members
  • Contribute to the development of innovative workflows and design best practices
  • Maintain and expand technical knowledge of electrical systems, codes, and construction methods
  • Ensure quality and productivity of deliverables within required timelines
