Design Engineer - Electromechanical Components

IDEX Corporation•Rohnert Park, CA
•$109,800 - $164,600

About The Position

At IDEX Health & Science, the Electromechanical Design Engineer designs, develops, and optimizes components used in fluidic systems for life sciences, including rotary shear valves, sensors, degassers, and pumps. These components support diagnostics and scientific discovery instrumentation. The role bridges electrical and mechanical engineering, taking a holistic view of how products interact with system requirements. It involves hands-on prototyping and testing to solve technical challenges and develop innovative solutions. The engineer develops electromechanical subsystems for life science instruments and laboratory automation platforms, evaluates motor and system performance, creates CAD models and engineering documentation, and optimizes designs for performance, manufacturability, cost, and scalability. The role also validates prototypes, troubleshoots product issues, and collaborates with internal teams, customers, suppliers, and contract manufacturers through product development and production transition.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, or a related field.
  • 2–6+ years of experience in product design, preferably in motor control and automation.
  • Understanding of design principles and control methods for electronic devices.
  • Experience with various motor types.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, including design validation and data interpretation.
  • Proficiency in CAD tools such as SolidWorks.
  • Understanding of systems communication protocols for driving devices.
  • Proficiency in evaluating motor performance in relation to mechanical functions.
  • Cross-functional communication and customer-facing technical skills.
  • Experience working with complex systems, preferably optical- or fluidics-based.
  • Strength in troubleshooting and debugging component and system issues in customer instruments and environments.

Responsibilities

  • Design and develop electromechanical subsystems and components, including valves, pumps, sensors, and degassers, for life science instruments and laboratory automation platforms.
  • Use controllers, communication hardware, and associated protocols to guide benchtop evaluation of electromechanical performance.
  • Create mechanical architectures incorporating motors, actuators, sensors, encoders, optics, fluidics, pneumatics, and thermal management systems.
  • Generate 3D CAD models, assemblies, engineering drawings, and design documentation.
  • Perform engineering calculations, tolerance stack-ups, and trade-off analyses.
  • Optimize designs for performance, manufacturability, cost, and scalability.
  • Collaboratively develop test plans for performance validation.
  • Build and evaluate prototypes to validate design concepts and performance requirements.
  • Support product troubleshooting, root cause investigations, and design improvements.
  • Lead Design for Manufacturability (DFM) sessions and apply DFM principles to optimize designs.
  • Work with supply chain, quality, and manufacturing teams to transition products from development into production.
  • Partner with customers, application scientists, and product management to translate customer needs into product requirements.
  • Participate in product roadmap planning and technology evaluations.
  • Participate in design reviews and technical risk assessments.
  • Collaborate with electrical and software engineers on hardware and firmware development.

Benefits

  • Health benefits
  • 401(k) retirement savings program with company match
  • Paid time off (PTO)
  • Potential eligibility for a performance-based bonus plan
