About The Position

A Derrickhand works up in the derrick on a drilling rig, guiding the drill string or casing. Their responsibilities include monitoring tank levels, adding chemicals, and maintaining shale shakers and mud pumps. This role requires comfort working at heights and is a crucial step for those aspiring to become a Driller.

Responsibilities

  • Use a harness and platform-climbing device to reach the proper position on the derrick when the drill string or casing pipe is being raised or lowered.
  • Work off the monkey board when the rig is making a trip (running drill pipe in and out of the hole).
  • Unlatch elevators from the pipe and rack the pipe sequentially in the fingers after it has been set on the pipe-racking floor by the Floorhand when coming out of the hole.
  • Pull the proper stand of pipe from the fingers and latch the elevator around the stand when running in the hole.
  • Ensure the blocks stay at the rig floor until the Derrickhand hooks up their fall arrest system and signals the Driller.
  • Condition the drilling fluid and maintain mud pumps and mud handling and treating equipment under the direction of the Driller.
  • Perform all duties in a safe manner.
  • Handle miscellaneous duties above the derrick floor, including lubrication of hoisting equipment, stringing of lines, and minor repairs to hoisting equipment and the derrick.
  • Assist the Driller in the maintenance of the drilling rig and other equipment.
  • Become familiar with the work of the Driller as time permits.
  • Inspect and report to the Driller the condition of the derrick and derrick fall arrest equipment.
  • Note and report changes in the condition of the derrick or hazards that have developed during their tour.
  • Ensure anyone climbing the derrick uses a full body harness and fall protection above 3 meters.
  • Never be out of racking fingers when travelling block and hook are passing.
  • Ensure pipe left standing in the derrick is securely tied.
  • Change shifts on the rig floor, not on the monkey board.
  • Understand and apply Ensign's ethics policy in all business dealings.
  • Understand and agree to follow all of Ensign's Policy and Directives and procedures.
  • Maintain technical and safety certifications required by company or government agencies.
  • Conform to a drug-free workplace.
  • Understand Ensign's Health and Safety policy and take responsibility for own health and safety.
  • Use correct protective clothing and equipment and guard against misuse or damage.
  • Report any hazardous situations or injuries incurred during work.
