About The Position

The Deputy Director supports and assists the Division Director in providing operational and technical strategic leadership and management to the Division of Water Resources. This position participates in the development, communication, and implementation of strategic plans to guide staff in the administration of the division. The Deputy Director provides direction to the Section Chiefs under their oversight and other subordinate staff to ensure accomplishment of DEQ and Division goals including fulfillment of federal grant commitments; ensuring general management of day-to-day activities; addressing priority issues of the Secretary’s Office, legislative members, and/or the public. The position ensures progress toward longer term programmatic or management goals and ensures budget and personnel issues are properly managed at the Division level.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in one of the agricultural, biological, engineering, environmental or natural resource sciences or a closely related curriculum from an appropriately accredited institution and seven years of progressive experience in environmental work including two years in a supervisory capacity; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • A valid driver’s license is required.

Responsibilities

  • Plan and manage programs within established statutory and regulatory requirements.
  • Establish and approve policy or procedures to best improve business processes.
  • Provide guidance on personnel activities including salary administration activities, division position reclassification requests, and other human resources related projects.
  • Assist Department in establishing legislative priorities and strategies that meet the criteria of DEQ’s core mission.
  • Prepare and furnish information for the development, revision or modification of new or existing laws relating to the responsibilities of the Sections.
  • Administers funds from numerous state and federal sources ensuring the most effective use.
  • Review expenditures and make budget amendments as necessary.
  • Evaluate objectives, activities, outputs and outcomes to improve the functioning of the Sections managed.
