About The Position

The NYC Department of Design and Construction, Division of Infrastructure is currently seeking a Deputy Director (D/D) to join the Construction Management 3 – Manhattan – Section 1 team. Reporting directly to the Director, the selected candidate will be responsible for overseeing an annual capital program valued at over $300 million, comprising multiple construction projects. They will lead a team of professionals and technical construction staff supervising capital-funded projects, including sewer, water main, roadway, sidewalk, pedestrian ramp, plaza, climate resiliency, Design-build, and public space improvements, etc. Responsibilities will include reviewing construction plans, communicating with sponsor agencies, private utility firms, and other stakeholders to resolve field-related operational issues, and ensuring contract compliance and timely consultant payments. The candidate will schedule and conduct final inspections and participate in various agency task forces, including those focused on change order initiatives, project documentation, quality assurance, and forecasting quantities for the Yearly Mayoral Report. In addition, the Deputy Director will represent the borough in meetings with utility companies, city, state, and federal agencies as needed. They will train staff in fulfilling the team’s responsibilities, support recruitment efforts, and assist the Assistant Commissioner and Director in advancing the team's objectives. Lastly, the D/D will be responsible for ensuring that project closeouts (both Contractor and Consultant) are completed in a timely and consistent manner across all contracts assigned to their EICs. The D/D must also proactively follow up with all stakeholders to ensure that issues impacting the contracts are addressed and resolved promptly. Additionally, D/D is required to provide daily updates to their Director and A/C on any matters causing delays or presenting significant challenges. The D/D will also be required to immediately start working on any other tasks coming from Senior staff, including providing time-sensitive information, and responses.

Requirements

  • Only candidates who are permanent in the Administrative Engineer title or those who are reachable on the DDC promotional list (exam #5564) or the open-competitive list (exam #5163) may apply.
  • Must include a copy of your Notice of Results or indicate if you are permanent in the title.
  • A valid New York State License as a Professional Engineer.
  • Six (6) years of full-time satisfactory experience in chemical engineering, civil engineering, electrical engineering, environmental engineering, mechanical engineering, or plan examining work, at least two (2) years of which must have been in an executive, managerial, or administrative capacity.
  • All candidates must be currently authorized to work full-time in the United States (U.S.).
  • Candidates must present original documents proving citizenship or the legal right to work in the U.S.
  • Candidates must have proper work authorization when an employment offer is made.
  • Educational credentials must be from a U.S. Department of Education-recognized accredited institution.
  • Credentials from foreign institutions require independent equivalency verification from an approved evaluation service.
