About The Position

Assists the Detention Facility Superintendent in the direction and supervision of the various support and operational functions of the facility. Supervises and coordinates the day-to-day custody and care activities of a detention facility for juveniles; supervises the operational support services to complement the supervision of detainees. Serves in the absence of the Detention Facility Superintendent, and is subject to call in emergency situations during weekends, holidays and after work hours.

Requirements

  • Graduation from an accredited four (4) year college or university, preferably with a major in a behavioral or social science.
  • Two (2) years of experience in providing direct services to children and youth.
  • This must have involved the knowledge and its application in dealing with the behavior and attitudes of youth, counseling and guidance, casework or groupwork techniques, or rehabilitative techniques.
  • Two (2) years of progressively responsible professional counseling or other social services work experience in a criminal justice system (i.e., police, courts, corrections, or public/private rehabilitation agencies or organizations) which demonstrated the applicant’s knowledge of the philosophy, principles, concepts and practices relating to the criminal justice system, rehabilitation or institutional programs.
  • Such experience must have involved program development and evaluation or development of new and revised procedures.
  • Supervisory aptitude rather than actual supervisory experience is accepted.
  • Supervisory aptitude is the demonstration of aptitude or potential for the performance of supervisory duties through successful completion of regular or special assignments which involve some supervisory responsibilities or aspects; by serving as a group or team leader, or in similar work in which opportunities for demonstrating supervisory capabilities exist; by completion of training courses in supervision accompanied by application of supervisory skills in work assignments; or by favorable appraisals by a supervisor indicating the possession of supervisory potential.
  • Possession of a valid and unexpired driver's license to operate a motor vehicle.

Nice To Haves

  • Excess experience of the type and quality described below, or any administrative, professional, technical, or other responsible work which required a high degree of analytical skill may be substituted for education on a year-for-year basis.
  • Possession of a master's degree from an accredited university with specialization in sociology, psychology, criminology, penology, social work or other related behavioral science may be substituted for two (2) years of General Experience.
  • Successful completion of all requirements for the Ph.D. degree from an accredited college or university with specialization in one of the fields described in (1) above may be substituted for two (2) years of General Experience and one (1) year of the Specialized Experience.
