About The Position

This position serves as a legal advisor to the Board of Senior Family Court Judges and Directors in matters needing legal clarification. The role is responsible for drafting policies and procedures for judges and staff at the direction of the First Circuit Senior Family Court Judge or designee. Additionally, this position is responsible for drafting policies and procedures to implement Acts that impact the Family Courts, and drafting legal forms necessary to implement legislation and policies. The role provides general supervision over the Legal Research Unit, assists with revising and updating the Hawaii Family Court Rules, and serves as the First Circuit Family Court Custodian of Records. The position assists the Board of Senior Family Court Judges and Directors in keeping statewide policies and procedures consistent, renders legal research assistance to Family Court judges and administrative staff statewide, and drafts legal opinions and memoranda. It is also responsible for coordinating legislative efforts for the Family Courts statewide and performs other related duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • Graduation from an accredited school of law.
  • One (1) year of work experience in one or more of the following areas: Legal research and writing; litigation; review of and drafting of legislation; review of new laws for impact of court requirements; development of policies, procedures, and legal forms to implement new laws.
  • One (1) year of experience in a family court setting or litigating in family court proceedings that includes familiarity with and understanding of issues relating to family court processes and procedures.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of various court rules, policies and procedures.
  • Demonstrated responsibility for managing confidential, complex, jurisdictional, and controversial issues.
  • Possession of an active license to practice law in all courts of the State of Hawaii.
