About The Position

The Community Recreation & Events Deputy Director serves under the Department Director and performs a variety of technical, administrative and supervisory work in planning, organizing, directing and implementing the activities and operations of the Community Recreation and Events Department including the divisions of Forestry, Parks, Recreation, Aquatics, Golf, Cemetery, Civic Center, Ice & Events, Botanic Gardens, Weed and Pest, Special Events and Clean and Safe in addition to the Department Administrative office. Coordinate assigned activities with other City departments and outside agencies.

Requirements

  • Ten (10) years of increasingly responsible experience in recreation administration or related field, including three (3) years of supervisory or lead responsibility.
  • Knowledge of management and performance evaluation principles.
  • Knowledge of planning and program development practices.
  • Knowledge of municipal budget preparation and administration principles and practices.
  • Knowledge of operations, services, and activities of recreation and events programs.
  • Knowledge of pertinent Federal, State, and local laws, codes, and regulations.
  • Knowledge of occupational hazards and standard safety practices.
  • Management skills to analyze programs, policies, and operational needs.
  • Skills to delegate authority and responsibility.
  • Skills to select, supervise, train, and evaluate staff.
  • Skills to develop and administer program goals, objectives, and procedures.
  • Skills to research, analyze, and evaluate new service delivery methods and techniques.
  • Skills to analyze problems, identify alternative solutions, project consequences of proposed actions & implementation.
  • Ability to manage, direct and coordinate the work of subordinate staff.
  • Ability to assist in leading and directing recreational and event operations, services, and activities of the department.
  • Ability to assist in the review and administration of large and complex budgets.
  • Ability to communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships.
  • Ability to monitor and remedy unsafe conditions, respond to emergency situations, and maintain accident and incident reports.

Nice To Haves

  • Bachelor’s degree in recreation management, business administration or related field and more than five (5) years of increasingly responsible experience in recreation administration.

Responsibilities

  • Support the Director in the development and management of all Community Recreation and Events department services, program activities, goals and objectives, policies, and procedures.
  • Assist in establishing appropriate service and staffing levels; monitor and evaluate the efficiency and effectiveness of service delivery methods and procedures; allocate resources accordingly.
  • Assist in the planning and coordination, through subordinate managers, the department's work plan; assign projects and programmatic areas of responsibility; review and evaluate work methods and procedures; meet with management staff to identify and resolve problems.
  • Assist in the assessment and monitoring of workloads, administrative and support systems, and internal reporting relationships; identify opportunities for improvement; direct and implement changes.
  • Assist in the selection, training, motivation, and evaluation of department personnel; provide or coordinate staff training; work with employees to correct deficiencies and initiate discipline when necessary.
  • Assist in the development and administration of the department budget; assist in the approval of expenditures and budgetary adjustments in the absence of the Director.
  • Assist in the explanation of department programs, policies, and activities; assist in the negotiation and resolution of sensitive and controversial issues.
  • Assist in the construction and maintenance of department projects.
  • Assist in representing the department to other City departments, elected officials and outside agencies; coordinate department activities with those of other departments and outside agencies and organizations.
  • Perform other duties and responsibilities as required.
