About The Position

The Suffolk County Department of Social Services (SCDSS) is committed to strengthening and preserving families by providing financial assistance and services to eligible residents in accordance with local, State and Federal laws and regulations. The Suffolk County Department of Social Services is seeking to fill the position of Deputy Commissioner of Social Services. The work involves responsibility for assisting the Commissioner of Social Services in the formation of administrative policies and procedures for the Department of Social Services. The Deputy Commissioner acts for the Commissioner in the Commissioner's absence and is involved in all operations of the Department. Work is performed under the general direction of the Commissioner and is reviewed through consultations, conferences and written reports. General supervision is exercised over a subordinate staff of administrative and clerical personnel. Does related work as required.

Requirements

  • Graduation from a New York State or Regionally accredited college or university with a Bachelor's Degree and six (6) years of full-time paid experience in a health, education or social service agency, four (4) years of which must have been in an administrative or supervisory capacity; or,
  • Graduation from a New York State or Regionally accredited college or university with a Bachelor's Degree and six (6) years of experience in an administrative or management position where there is responsibility for planning, directing and coordinating the work of a substantial staff working in several units or performing several separate functions.
  • Post graduate education at a New York State or Regionally accredited college or university in social work, public administration, hospital administration, educational administration, or business administration, shall be the equivalent, on a year-for-year basis up to two years, of the above prescribed experience.
  • All appointments to the position of Deputy Commissioner of Social Services must be approved by the State Commissioner of Social Services.

Responsibilities

  • Assists in developing and implementing policies and procedures for the administration of departmental operations;
  • Coordinates and supervises, various intra-agency functions and operations as required;
  • Assists in the preparation of the departmental budget and the maintenance of fiscal controls;
  • Assists the Commissioner in the application and enforcement of agency policies and procedures;
  • Acts for and in behalf of the Commissioner in the Commissioner's absence;
  • Coordinates various policies with State, Federal and other County Departments.
