About The Position

The New York City Law Department is accepting applications from admitted attorneys for the position of Deputy Chief of the Executive Litigation & Policy Group (“ELPG”), which is part of our Executive Division. Working closely with the ELPG Chief and senior Law Department leadership, the Deputy Chief will assist in managing a team of attorneys responsible for both counseling and litigation functions in matters with significant revenue and programmatic implications for the City of New York. This includes the commencement and defense of complex and high-impact litigation within the group’s purview, spanning areas such as administrative, constitutional, and municipal law. The counseling work focuses on federal grants and emerging regulatory and enforcement areas of law, and entails preparing briefing materials and presentations, maintaining reports and information trackers, and drafting guidance documents. In addition to managing a portfolio of significant matters, the Deputy Chief will help oversee litigation strategy, coordinate across city, state, and federal government agencies and non-governmental stakeholders, and manage the development of legal and policy positions in response to federal regulatory and enforcement actions affecting citywide operations. The Deputy Chief will also assist with strategic planning, personnel management, attorney development, and operational oversight of the group.

Requirements

  • At least 10 years of legal experience following graduation from an ABA accredited law school.
  • Admitted to the practice of law in New York State.
  • Admitted or eligible for immediate admission to the SDNY and EDNY.
  • Exceptional legal writing, analytical, and advocacy skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate complex legal positions effectively to various stakeholders in both litigation and advisory contexts.
  • History of successful supervision and management of attorneys and legal support professionals.

Nice To Haves

  • Substantial experience with complex or high-stakes litigation – particularly affirmative litigation.
  • Deep familiarity with municipal law.
