About The Position

The City of Harrisonburg is seeking a dynamic and forward-thinking Deputy Chief of Police to join its Command Staff. This exempt, full-time position is responsible for directing staff, policy development, program planning, fiscal management, and operational and strategic oversight of the department. The Deputy Chief will serve as a supportive leader and mentor, motivating and developing others through relationship building and demonstrating a commitment to the health and wellness of department members. The ideal candidate is a natural collaborator, a leader who seeks opportunities to improve the department through partnerships with community stakeholders and members, and is well-versed in policing methods and trends, intentionally introducing emerging technologies and methodologies to support the department's current and future needs.

Requirements

  • Valid driver's license
  • Bachelor’s degree with coursework in criminal justice, police administration, or related field
  • Extensive (6+ years) experience in a command level (Lieutenant or greater) position of law enforcement
  • Completion of the FBI National Academy, the Northwestern School of Police Staff and Command (SPSC), or an equivalent education program is preferred but not required for consideration.
  • Current possession of or the ability to obtain the Peace Officer’s Standards & Training (POST) in the Commonwealth of Virginia within six (6) months of hire date.
  • Satisfactory results from DMV driving record review
  • Satisfactory results from Criminal background investigation, including fingerprinting and VCIN
  • Satisfactory results from Credit check
  • Satisfactory results from Industry-specific physical exam
  • Satisfactory results from Social media review
  • Satisfactory results from Drug screen
