About The Position

Delaware's Attorney General, the State's chief law enforcement officer, has a broad responsibility to combat crime, uphold civil rights, safeguard families, provide legal services to the entirety of state government, and fight fraud. In the Civil Division, approximately 80 attorneys provide legal support to the executive branch agencies in the form of general counsel advice, administrative hearing prosecutions, board representation, and all stages of civil litigation. The Delaware Department of Justice, Civil Division, Administrative Law and Education Unit, Kent County, is looking for a highly motivated and committed Deputy Attorney General (DAG) to serve as general counsel to administrative boards and commissions, primarily within the Delaware Division of Professional Regulation.

Requirements

• Strong legal writing skills.
• Ability to anticipate and properly address legal issues.
• Ability to conduct accurate and effective legal research.
• Ability to provide sound legal advice.
• Ability to work independently, meet deadlines, and develop good working relationships with board members, other DAGs, and support staff.
• Membership in the Delaware Bar is required.
• Must be available for some evening meetings.
• Travel to Kent County is required.
• Applicants must be legally authorized to work in the United States.

• This position is a classification organized under an exclusive bargaining representative (labor organization) that has been elected by employees as their representative for collective bargaining and other applicable terms and conditions of employment, in accordance with Title 29, Chapter 59 and Title 19, Chapter 13 and 16.

Responsibilities

• Provide legal advice to various professional administrative boards and commissions within the Delaware Division of Professional Regulation that regulate the practice of various licensed professions within the state, the Delaware Association of Professional Engineers, the Environmental Appeals Board, the Coastal Zone Industrial Control Board, Governor’s Advisory Council for Exceptional Citizens, and the Lottery Commission.
• Provide guidance on applicable legal standards and Freedom of Information Act compliance.
• Draft and review legislation and regulations.
• Attend public meetings.
• Represent the boards and commissions in administrative proceedings, including drafting orders, and in court on appeals from those proceedings.
