Deployment Infrastructure Engineer

About The Position

Rigetti is hiring a Deployment Infrastructure Engineer to own deployments of its quantum systems at customer and partner sites worldwide and on its cloud platform. The engineer will serve as the technical point of contact throughout each deployment, from gathering site requirements through installation, validation, and handoff. This is both a build and operations role, working with Infrastructure, Engineering Operations, Quantum Engineers, software engineering, customers, and partners to develop and support cloud and on-premises infrastructure, improve deployment processes, and resolve issues. The role includes international travel and on-call rotation during installations. As the role grows, the engineer will take on additional responsibilities for Rigetti’s core infrastructure and IT systems. The successful candidate will bring hands-on experience in DevOps, cloud infrastructure, networking, and modern deployment practices, including deployment into physical environments outside their control. Site reliability and observability experience are a plus; automation and application development experience are also beneficial but not required. Quantum computing experience is not required, though curiosity about the technology is appreciated.

Requirements

Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or Computer Engineering, or equivalent experience.
At least 5 years of relevant industry experience in DevOps, cloud, site reliability engineering, field or deployment engineering, or HPC/research-computing operations.
Hands-on experience with Kubernetes and scaling tools such as Karpenter or EKS.
3–5 years of experience with AWS or similar cloud providers.
3–5 years of experience with Linux systems for server use.
1–2 years of experience with Terraform or similar infrastructure-as-code tools.
1–2 years of experience with observability tools such as Grafana Cloud, Prometheus, or Sentry.
Significant experience debugging production environments and supporting incident resolution.
On-call experience supporting production-level applications, deployments, and/or devices.
Hands-on experience deploying to production environments using modern deployment strategies, including physical customer, lab, or field environments.
Experience working directly with customers or external partners in a technical role.
Willingness to travel internationally for installations and onboarding, including extended site visits.

Nice To Haves

CCNA, CompTIA Network+, AWS certification, or equivalent practical experience.
Experience with load balancers, firewalls, VPNs, wireless networks, and network monitoring tools.
Experience building or maintaining end-to-end CI/CD pipelines beyond basic familiarity.
Experience in a data center, lab, manufacturing, semiconductor, research, or cleanroom environment.
Bare-metal provisioning experience with Windows and Linux devices.
Experience installing or supporting scientific instruments, HPC systems, or semiconductor equipment at customer sites.
Experience managing control or embedded hardware alongside its software.
Background in quantum, physics, or other deep-tech environments.
Experience with site reliability and observability.
Practice with automation and application development.

Responsibilities

Own deployments of Rigetti's quantum systems on on-premises and cloud platforms, including on-site installation and commissioning at customer and partner locations.
Develop, optimize, and deploy infrastructure for Rigetti's quantum systems, and support and validate deployments.
Serve as the primary technical point of contact for customers during deployment: capture site requirements, surface hidden assumptions, and drive issues to resolution across Rigetti teams.
Work with Quantum Engineers and Engineering Operations to test, validate, and measure deployed quantum systems, including control systems operating alongside each fridge.
Suggest and implement improvements to cloud and on-premises infrastructure and the deployment process.
Lead retrospectives on completed deployments and incorporate lessons into standard processes.
Provide site-reliability support and lead root-cause analysis for incidents during and after deployments.
Partner with Engineering Operations to create observability and reliability across Rigetti's systems.
Partner with internal software engineering to develop, maintain, and improve deployment testing practices.
Build and maintain test and staging environments that mirror customer deployments.
Document deployment, site-reliability, and testing procedures to establish clear workflows across teams.
Contribute to improvements in Rigetti's core infrastructure and IT systems.
Handle role-based access control and access-control requests.
Help define the scope, support model, and escalation paths for customer deployments.
