About The Position

AECOM is actively seeking a full-time Department Manager for our New York/New Jersey Area Environmental Planning and Permitting (EPP) Department. The Department includes staff who are primarily located throughout the New York/New Jersey metro area serving Federal, State and Local governments as well as many private clients. The New York/New Jersey Area EPP Department Manager is expected to improve revenue growth, through collaboration with Sales Leads and their own client engagement; ensure high staff utilization without sacrificing quality, safety or performance; manage their Department’s Profit and Loss; and mentor and grow their staff. The candidate should have an excellent work ethic, interpersonal skills, and a professional attitude.

Requirements

  • BA/BS in Environmental Sciences field of study + 10 years of related experience or demonstrated equivalency of experience and/or education, including 2 years of leadership
  • Valid Driver’s License and as a condition of employment must be able to pass AECOM’s Motor Vehicle Records review.
  • Business development and client relationship building experience.
  • Permitting experience.
  • US citizenship is required.

Nice To Haves

  • MA or MS Degree in Environmental Sciences and/or a Master of Business Administration (MBA).
  • 15+ years of experience in Natural Resource Investigations as they pertain to the state and federal permitting in the New York/New Jersey area.
  • Demonstrated understanding of project delivery requirements, creativity, foresight, collaborating with a multi-disciplinary team to meet project goals and deliver high-quality technical excellence.
  • Previous experience with managing technical staff.
  • Experience in fiscal management and reporting for complex projects, or cost centers.

Responsibilities

  • Improve revenue growth through collaboration with Sales Leads and direct client engagement.
  • Ensure high staff utilization without sacrificing quality, safety, or performance.
  • Manage the department’s Profit and Loss (P&L).
  • Mentor and grow staff across the region.
  • Oversee approximately 60 professionals.
  • Provide leadership and direction through managers and professional staff; lead efforts to grow company technical expertise.
  • Responsible for the financial performance of the department.
  • Review proposals for technical and financial content.
  • Develop business plans and manage financial tracking.
  • Advise regional business managers on growth, staff recruitment and retention, and technical excellence strategies.
  • Recruit and help retain staff at all levels.
  • Maintain a technical role as project manager, lead verifier, or technical lead as appropriate.
  • Work closely with Project Delivery Leads to drive project financial performance and client satisfaction.
  • Lead and support business development opportunities.
  • Anticipate and solve both routine and complex operational problems; determine operational objectives and requirements; organize programs and projects; develop standards and guides for diverse natural resource activities.
  • Drive execution of tactical business plans with direction from a region business line leaders for growth and profitability of the regional business line.
  • Manage regional business development activities, regional client management, and regional business line resources. Provide input into strategic/operating plans.
  • Direct the work of associates performing different tasks within the same field.
  • Apply in-depth knowledge of all aspects of the field, along with strong interpersonal and problem-solving skills.
  • Oversee and ensure compliance with the New York City Environmental Quality Review (SEQA) process for projects within NYC, including preparation and review of Environmental Assessment Statements (EAS) and Environmental Impact Statements (EIS) in accordance with local requirements.
  • Lead and manage the preparation of documentation required under the New York State Environmental Quality Review Act (SEQRA), ensuring all projects meet state-mandated environmental review standards.
  • Coordinate with city and state agencies, stakeholders, and the public to facilitate transparent and efficient SEQA and SEQRA processes.
  • Provide technical guidance to project teams on the procedural and substantive requirements of SEQA and SEQRA, including scoping, public participation, and mitigation strategies.
  • Stay current with evolving regulations and best practices related to SEQA and SEQRA to ensure AECOM’s projects in the NJ/NY area are compliant and exemplary.
