About The Position

This role will lead Customer Service/Front End and General Merchandise teams for the West Detroit Market. The ideal candidate must have a strong commitment to developing future leaders and driving operational excellence. The Department Manager is responsible for overall team member engagement, including recognition, feedback, coaching, performance management, training, development, and succession planning. They will direct Leads and Team Leaders, and be accountable for area operations and financials (shrink, productivity, safety, scheduling, staffing needs, and conflict resolution). The role involves identifying and implementing process improvements and serving as a steward of the Meijer culture. The Department Manager will work to identify and implement process improvements as well as serve as a steward of the Meijer culture.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience.
  • Minimum 4+ years of retail/grocery or customer service experience.
  • Progressive leadership experience preferred.
  • A passion to provide industry leading service.
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate with team members in a way that provides clear and precise direction.
  • Demonstrated ability to analyze financial and statistical information and use that information to make informed decisions.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead an organization that practices working safely at all times.
  • Demonstrates proactive/creative thinking and applies it to the business.
  • A thorough understanding of seasonal and diverse merchandising which leads to meeting the needs of our customers/community and gaining sales and market share.

Responsibilities

  • Overall team member engagement for those in span of care.
  • Driving recognition, feedback and coaching, performance management, training and development, and succession planning.
  • Directing Leads and Team Leaders.
  • Accountable for area operations and financials (shrink, productivity, safety, scheduling & forecasting staffing needs, and team member and customer conflict resolution).
  • Identifying and implementing process improvements.
  • Serving as a steward of the Meijer culture.
  • Ensuring team members are receiving appropriate onboarding, training and development, and coaching and feedback.
  • Identifying talent and engaging in career discussions to support overall store staffing and ensure a diversified talent pipeline strategy.
  • Involvement in candid discussions with team members to ensure Meijer standards are upheld and team members have the ability to grow within the organization.
  • Accountability for area operations and financial results by overseeing the execution of corporate plans to ensure all services and products are effectively managed to maximize sales and productivity, ultimately owning budget line items in the P&L.
  • Driving safety and compliance throughout the store in addition to overall condition management and responsibility for following all compliance procedures.
  • Ensuring Team Leaders and Leads are providing guidance and assigning daily work assignments for team members as well as any training needs.
