Requirements

  • Dental Assistant shall possess specialty training from a licensed Dentist and/or certification from an accredited Dental Assistant school.
  • Training must include dental radiology and radiology safety.
  • Must be licensed, any state.
  • Current CPR certification in accordance with the American Red Cross or American Heart Association.
  • One year of experience providing Dental Assistant services.

Responsibilities

  • Collect and track data and enter data into the agency’s electronic system.
  • Track scheduling of patient care.
  • Maintain patient medical records and confidentiality.
  • Assist Dental Officer in dental specialty sections: restorative, oral surgery, endodontics, periodontics, prosthetics, and examinations.
  • Retrieve patient’s records and escort patients to proper dental specialty section.
  • Seat and prepare patient for attending Dental Officer.
  • Assist Dental Officer by preparing dental instruments, essential materials, drugs, and medications.
  • Pass instruments, retract tissues, irrigate oral cavities, and operate aspirator.
  • Observe patient’s responses and assist patient for dismissal from the Dental Clinic.
  • Give instructions for subsequent dental appointments.
  • Make necessary entries on dental treatment records (both electronic and paper records).
  • Prepare dental treatment room for the next patient.
  • Assist in the treatment of emergency cases.
  • Provide dental health education.
  • Perform Dental prophylaxes – polishing of coronal portion of teeth, if the assistant is a Registered Dental Assistant (RDA) or Expanded Functions Dental Assistant (EFDA).
  • Perform Dental screening examinations.
  • Prepare patients for periodontal surgery.
  • Complete dental and periodontal charting.
  • Prepare, place, and remove packs.
  • Place temporary fillings (RDA, EFDA).
  • Place and remove rubber dams.
  • Maintain dental equipment.
  • Clean, sharpen, and sterilize instruments.
  • Perform daily inspection of equipment and make minor repairs.
  • Report defective equipment, or institute corrective action.
  • Use dental hand instruments, mechanical instruments (including ultrasonic), oral hygiene aides and prophylaxis paste to provide necessary oral prophylactic services.
  • Prepare entries for patients’ records.
  • Select and apply medication in proper portion and anti-cariogenic agents to surface of teeth.
  • Apply medication prescribed by a Dental Officer to gingiva to promote healing.
  • Fabricate and repair dental prostheses and appliances under supervision.
  • Perform procedures pursuant to fabrication and repair of complete denture prostheses and removable partial prostheses.
  • Use acrylic resins and porcelain as basic materials.
  • Take radiographs of patients using digital intraoral and panoramic dental radiography.
  • Obtain diagnostic quality periapical, occlusal, lateral jaw, and TMJ radiographs.
  • Correctly position patient and sensor.
  • Determine level of radiation intensity to minimize radiation exposure of patients.
  • Process and save digital radiographs to patient medical records.
  • Maintain proper infection control procedures in radiographic techniques.
  • Sterilize contaminated biological waste of dental clinic.
