About The Position

The Demand Flexibility Analytics Intern will join SVCE’s small but mighty Demand Flexibility team to conduct research and deliver analytical insights that support flexibility initiatives. Working closely with experts across SVCE’s Customer Success and Risk, Analytics, and Data teams, the intern will analyze the value of Virtual Power Plants (VPPs) and other demand flexibility solutions for the grid, SVCE, and customers. This role will focus on developing user-friendly dashboards, conducting quantitative analyses, and researching emerging technologies related to demand flexibility. Projects may include evaluating a wide range of costs and benefits of flexible load resources, documenting industry developments, and identifying potential program opportunities.

Requirements

  • Proficiency in analyzing large and complex datasets using Python or R (e.g., pandas, Jupyter Notebook, VS Code).
  • Experience using SQL to extract, manipulate, and aggregate data from cloud-based data warehouses.
  • Experience with data visualization tools such as Power BI, Tableau, or Looker Studio.
  • Familiarity with Git/GitHub and version control best practices.
  • Experience with data wrangling and validating data quality across multiple data sources.
  • Strong analytical thinking and curiosity in generating actionable insights and recommendations.
  • Rising senior, recent graduate, or graduate student pursuing a degree in a quantitative field such as Information Systems, Energy Systems, Engineering, Mathematics, Data Science, or a related discipline.
  • Valid California Class C driver’s license required.
  • Ability to perform standard office-based physical activities with reasonable accommodations.

Nice To Haves

  • Graduate students preferred.
  • Preferred familiarity with energy markets, distributed energy resources (DERs), Virtual Power Plants (VPPs), and/or demand flexibility concepts.

Responsibilities

  • Build 1–2 Microsoft Power BI dashboards that calculate and visualize the monetary value of demand flexibility resources to SVCE across different end-use loads and customer capabilities.
  • Leverage SVCE’s cloud-based data warehouse using SQL, Python, and Git to analyze and interpret large datasets.
  • Research load flexibility solutions across customer classes, rates, building sizes, and end-use applications.
  • Develop and maintain a research catalog of emerging technologies and industry trends to share with internal stakeholders.
