About The Position

The Deli Clerk provides courteous, personalized service while preparing and selling custom-sliced and packaged deli items, food and party trays, hot foods, cold prepared takeout foods, and salads. The role supports customer-service goals, maintains product quality and freshness, and helps keep the deli area clean, sanitary, visually appealing, and safe. The position requires following company standards and policies, food-handling and sanitation requirements, and applicable safety practices. Work takes place in a temperature-controlled store environment, with exposure to cooking equipment and hot and cold cases, coolers, and freezers. Scheduled hours vary, and the employee may be required to work nights, early mornings, weekends, and holidays.

Requirements

Ability to be friendly, courteous, and tactful, and to maintain composure when dealing with customers and coworkers.
Good oral communication skills and ability to read and follow recipes.
Ability to push and pull fully loaded hand trucks, six-wheel carts, and pallet jacks.
Ability to frequently reach, lift, stack, and maneuver objects of varying dimensions and weights up to approximately 55 pounds.
Ability to perform repetitive arm movements for slicing, cutting, and preparing deli products.
Ability to stand for long periods; walk and move rapidly; and frequently bend, stoop, twist, and turn.
Manual dexterity, good eye-hand coordination, and ability to operate kitchen utensils and equipment.
Mental alertness to complete work safely and accurately; knowledge of basic mathematics and weights and measures; and ability to learn product taste, content, and perishability, as well as safety, sanitation, and department procedures.
Good attendance.
Ability to work in a temperature-controlled store environment and tolerate exposure to cooking hazards and temperatures up to 350°F, hot cases around 140°F, cold cases around 35°F, coolers around 28°F, and freezers around -20°F.
May be required to work nights, early mornings, weekends, and holidays; scheduled hours vary.

Responsibilities

Provide fast, friendly, courteous, personalized customer service and help meet or exceed Division customer-service goals.
Handle customer relations positively, including resolving customer complaints effectively, and promote the company’s personalized-service philosophy.
Use suggestive selling and other sales techniques, including in-store intercom announcements and one-on-one customer contact.
May order products to maintain adequate supply, quality, and freshness.
Receive and move products; organize cooler and storage areas; refrigerate products promptly; maintain proper storage temperatures; verify orders against invoices; report shortages and claims; and date and rotate products according to freshness and code-dating policies.
Prepare and package products efficiently and according to company standards, including sandwiches, hot and cold foods, and food and party trays.
Operate related kitchen equipment and utensils, including knives, fryers, conventional and microwave ovens, slicers, grills, food processors, wrappers, and scales; wear latex, safety, and heat-resistant gloves as appropriate.
Maintain deli case cleanliness, visual appeal, and inventory levels, and ensure proper cleanliness, holding temperatures, sanitation, equipment appearance, and a safe work environment.
Meet sanitation and food- and product-handling safety requirements.
Perform job duties safely, accurately, honestly, and with integrity, and carry out other necessary duties.
Comply with company policies, including attendance, grooming standards, and dress codes.
