About The Position

This role encompasses two primary functions: serving as a Classroom Teacher responsible for student learning in a core academic subject, and as a Defensive Coordinator/Coach responsible for instructing and managing student athletes in their sport. The Classroom Teacher aims to foster intellectual, emotional, physical, and social growth, enabling students to succeed in society. The Defensive Coordinator/Coach aims to develop student athletes' skills, teamwork, and sportsmanship while contributing to the overall educational program.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited university
  • Valid Texas teaching certificate with required endorsements or related training and work experience for certification waivers under the District of Innovation Plan (DOI)
  • Demonstrated competency in the core academic subject area assigned
  • Current automated external defibrillator (AED) and cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) certificate (for Physical Education Teachers)
  • Knowledge of core academic subject assigned
  • Knowledge of curriculum and instruction
  • Ability to instruct students and manage their behavior
  • Strong organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills
  • Student teaching, approved internship, or related work experience
  • Knowledge of coaching techniques and procedures
  • Knowledge of University Interscholastic League (UIL) rules
  • Ability to instruct and supervise student athletes
  • Ability to pass U.S. Department of Transportation alcohol and drug tests and annual physical
  • Clear and valid Texas commercial driver’s license with Passenger (P) and School Bus (S) endorsements
  • Coaching or participant experience in sport assigned
  • Current first aid, cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), and automated external defibrillator (AED) certificate (for Coaching Responsibilities)

Responsibilities

  • Develop and implement lesson plans that fulfill district curriculum requirements and accommodate individual student differences.
  • Plan and use appropriate instructional strategies, materials, and technology based on student learning styles and needs.
  • Conduct ongoing assessments of student achievement and use results to inform instruction.
  • Work cooperatively with special education teachers to modify curricula as needed for students with Individual Education Plans (IEPs).
  • Plan and assign work to instructional aides and volunteers and oversee their completion.
  • Create a classroom environment conducive to learning and appropriate for student development.
  • Manage student behavior in accordance with the Student Code of Conduct.
  • Take necessary precautions to protect students, equipment, materials, and facilities.
  • Compile, maintain, and file all required reports, records, and documents.
  • Establish and maintain professional relationships and open communication with parents, students, colleagues, and community members.
  • Participate in staff development activities to improve job-related skills.
  • Comply with state, district, and school regulations and policies.
  • Attend and participate in faculty meetings and serve on staff committees.
  • Follow district safety protocols and emergency procedures.
  • Provide instruction and coach students to develop skills and ability to excel in assigned sport(s).
  • Manage and supervise athletic activities, contests, and practice sessions.
  • Work with other staff to plan and implement instructional goals for student athletes.
  • Establish performance criteria for competition and evaluate students' athletic abilities.
  • Model performance criteria and physical movements required for successful sport performance.
  • Take necessary precautions to protect student athletes, equipment, material, and facilities.
  • Work with the athletic director to schedule competitions and plan season activities.
  • Coordinate with the transportation department for travel arrangements.
  • Ensure compliance with all UIL rules.
  • Monitor and enforce student eligibility criteria for extracurricular participation.
  • Develop and coordinate a continuing evaluation of the coaching program.
  • Accompany and supervise student athletes during athletic competitions.
  • Instruct and advise students on NCAA regulations regarding academic requirements for scholarships and recruiting.
  • Apply and enforce student discipline during athletic contests, practice sessions, and trips.
  • Encourage sportsmanlike conduct in all phases of athletic participation.
  • Establish and maintain open communication by conducting conferences with parents, students, principals, and teachers.
  • Assist in the selection of equipment and instructional materials.
  • Initiate and approve purchase orders and bids.
  • Oversee the cleaning, repairing, and storing of all campus athletic equipment.
  • Maintain a current inventory of all equipment and fixed assets within the program.
  • Assign and oversee the work of assistant coaches and student athletic assistants.
