About The Position

Newport News Shipbuilding (NNS) is the largest industrial employer in Virginia, with over 25,000 employees. They are the sole designer, builder, and refueler of U.S. Navy nuclear aircraft carriers and one of two providers of U.S. Navy nuclear submarines. NNS is seeking Deck Electricians to install, repair, overhaul, and operationally test electrical systems aboard ships. This includes systems for lighting, power distribution, communication, and navigation. The role requires reading and interpreting complex electrical and electronic schematics and the ability to switch between various tasks such as lighting and receptacle hook-ups, installing wire way racks, rebuilding equipment, installing electronic controls, lighting maintenance, performing preventative maintenance, and welding studs for equipment mounting.

Requirements

  • Ability to work at extreme heights or small confined spaces.
  • Ability to kneel, squat, crawl, bend, stoop, and climb.
  • Ability to lift 40 lbs.
  • Must take and pass a respirator fit test.
  • Ability to work indoors/outdoors year round in all weather conditions.
  • Ability to work assigned shift as production needs.
  • Ability to pass Physical Agility Test.
  • Successful completion of an electrical, technical, mechanical or vocational program; related military training; OR at least 1 year of experience as a commercial, residential, industrial or marine electrician / related experience in mechanical, carpentry, auto mechanics, roofing or computer/IT.

Responsibilities

  • Installation, repair, overhaul, and operational testing of electrical systems aboard ships.
  • Working on ship electrical systems including lighting, power distribution, communication, or navigation.
  • Reading and interpreting complex electrical and electronic schematics.
  • Switching between differing tasks ranging from lighting and receptacle hook-ups, installing wire way racks, rebuilding equipment, installing electronic controls, lighting maintenance, performing preventative maintenance, or welding of studs for mounting equipment.
