About The Position

Under the direct supervision of the Principal, assist administrators, teachers, parents and students in resolving student attendance, behavioral and disciplinary problems in a consistent manner. This role involves maintaining records of disciplinary actions, conferring with stakeholders on discipline and problem-solving, providing mentoring and consultation services, and reporting on issues affecting student performance. The Dean will recommend appropriate programs for students with behavioral problems, instruct students on school rules and policies, and assist in arranging tutorial instruction. Additionally, the Dean will address student attendance problems, assist in the administration of the In-School Suspension Program and co-curricular activities, arrange meetings regarding disciplinary problems, counsel individual students, and make appropriate referrals. Coordination with community and government agencies regarding drug and alcohol abuse, truancy, and other conduct issues is also a key responsibility, as is assisting in developing policies for building security and safety, and preparing for student expulsion hearings. The Dean will also coordinate with Building Principals in the operation of the Pottsgrove Virtual Academy (PGVA).

Requirements

  • PA Certification as required for position.
  • Motor Vehicle Operator's License or ability to provide own transportation.
  • At least five years of experience in public education.
  • Master's degree.
  • PA Principal Certification.
  • Successful experience working with children at risk.
  • Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing.
  • Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with others contacted in the course of work.
  • Knowledge of applicable laws and regulations regarding student discipline, bullying, sexual harassment, etc.
  • Knowledge of student behavior management techniques.
  • Knowledge of dispute resolution techniques and ability to engage in dispute resolution.
  • Must have current Act 34, 151 & 114 Clearances.

Nice To Haves

  • Successful experience developing and implementing professional development programs relating to non-academic student behavioral issues.
  • Prior experience as a building administrator or dean of students at the middle school level.

Responsibilities

  • Assist teachers, parents and students in resolving non-academic student issues, such as behavioral problems.
  • Maintain records of student disciplinary actions in accordance with applicable laws, regulations, and District policies.
  • Confer with parents, teachers, support services personnel, and students on matters of discipline and problem-solving.
  • Provide mentoring services to students and consultation services to parents.
  • Report to administrators, teachers, school attendance staff, parents, and students relative to issues affecting student performance.
  • Recommend appropriate programs for students to assist them with behavioral problems.
  • Instruct and advise students regarding their responsibility to adhere to school rules and policies, to foster a safe school environment, and to respect other individuals and property.
  • Assist in arranging for appropriate tutorial instruction related to assigned academic work.
  • Assist administrators, teachers, and school attendance staff in addressing student attendance problems.
  • Assist in the administration of the In-School Suspension Program and co-curricular activities.
  • Arrange meetings with students, parents, teachers, and administrators regarding disciplinary problems in school.
  • Counsel individual students as needed and make appropriate referrals for testing, guidance, or other services.
  • Coordinate with community and government agencies relating to drug and alcohol abuse, truancy, and other conduct.
  • Assist in developing policies and practices to assure building security and safety.
  • Assist in the preparation of student expulsion hearings.
  • Coordinate with Building Principals in the operation of Pottsgrove Virtual Academy (PGVA).
  • Perform other related tasks as assigned.
