About The Position

The Dean of Students is responsible for fostering and promoting a positive culture among scholars in the middle school and high school. This includes but is not limited to, the development of student character and ensuring a positive and structured environment that creates the conditions for learning. The Dean of Students supports with advancing the school’s mission, driving academic excellence, and ensuring operational effectiveness. This role provides instructional leadership, oversees school culture and student achievement, supervises and develops staff, and ensures compliance with District of Columbia Public Charter School Board (DC PCSB) standards. The Dean of Students play a critical role in fostering a safe, inclusive, achievement-oriented learning environment that supports all students and advances the school’s strategic and academic goals.

Requirements

  • BA/BS or relevant years of experience.
  • 3+ years of successful classroom experience.
  • Strong knowledge of restorative practices, PBIS, and MTSS.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Strong data analysis skills.

Nice To Haves

  • Valid teaching or administrative credential.
  • 2+ years of school leadership experience.
  • Experience designing or leading schoolwide culture or discipline.
  • Experience coaching teachers on classroom management.
  • Experience facilitating restorative conferences or behavior interventions.
  • Experience supporting attendance improvement initiatives.
  • Experience working with families in high-accountability and/or high-need school environments.

Responsibilities

  • Coaches teachers on the effective implementation of behavior management systems, restorative practices, and social-emotional learning strategies to promote a positive, supportive classroom environment.
  • Coaches teachers in building meaningful relationships with students and parents.
  • Work closely with the Assistant Principal to establish a positive and achievement-oriented school culture.
  • Use data to foster a proactive, positive culture, establish clear expectations, and ensure consistency.
  • Coordinate and implement a school-wide restorative behavior management system with meaningful and logical incentives and consequences.
  • Serve as the point person for breaches of culture, including maintaining the restorative response systems and the collection of data for removal, detention, and out-of-school suspension.
  • Assist in morning entry, hallway transitions, dismissal, school lunch, and safe passage.
  • Proactively pushes in to support teachers during transition and hot spot times of the day.
  • Works with the Assistant Principal on data entry and managing systems such as PowerSchool for reporting, maintaining, and analyzing scholar performance as required.
  • Communicate regularly and clearly with families to build trust and foster a collaborative school-home partnership.
  • Communicate promptly with families regarding behavior incidents; lead restorative conferences and problem-solving meetings to promote accountability and prevent recurrence.
  • Monitor daily attendance data and work proactively to address chronic absenteeism and tardiness.
  • Develop and implement engagement strategies and incentives to improve attendance and behavior.
  • Collaborate with the operations and outreach teams on student retention efforts.
  • Serve as a liaison between the school and families regarding student conduct, discipline, and attendance.
  • Support the planning of school events, family engagement activities, and student recognition programs.
  • Support school safety plans, including drills, emergency procedures, and supervision schedules.
  • Maintain a visible and active presence in hallways, during lunch, transitions, and dismissal.
  • Attends and actively participates in required professional development sessions and staff training.
  • Other related Duties as assigned
