About The Position

EduKAiT is the main platform for the Australian Government’s support to the Kiribati Education sector, specifically the Government of Kiribati and Ministry of Education (MoE), as it implements its Education Sector Strategic Plan (ESSP 2024-27). The program will be implemented in two five-year phases over 10 years. Phase 1 includes an emphasis on Literacy and Language for School Years 1-4, and gender and increased English proficiency for School Years 7–9 and address the high Year 9 dropout rate for boys. For more information, please see www.dt-global.com The Deaf Education Advisor will report to the EduKAiT Disability Inclusion Adviser and work closely with the GEDSI Coordinator and the Ministry of Education throughout the assignment. The Advisor will collaborate with the Ministry of Education, the Kiribati School and Centre for Children with Disabilities (KSCCD), Teachers of the Deaf, Sign Language Interpreters, the Kiribati Deaf Association, Te Toa Matoa and other relevant stakeholders. The Advisor will work in a technical advisory capacity, supporting the locally led Deaf Education Review and contributing to capacity strengthening throughout the assignment.

Requirements

  • Relevant tertiary qualifications in Deaf Education, Special Education, Inclusive Education, Education, Speech and Language, Linguistics, Disability Studies, or a related field.
  • Significant experience working in the field of deaf education.
  • Experience supporting language, communication, and literacy development for deaf learners across a range of educational settings.
  • Experience working with sign language users, Sign Language Interpreters, and deaf communities.
  • Experience designing and delivering professional learning, coaching, or workforce development activities for educators and other stakeholders.
  • Experience undertaking reviews, evaluations, research, advisory assignments, or system strengthening initiatives.
  • Experience developing practical recommendations and improvement plans that support sustainable education reform.

Nice To Haves

  • Additional qualifications or specialist training in deaf education, sign language, language development, literacy instruction, or inclusive education are highly desirable.
  • Experience working in low-resource, remote, culturally diverse, or Pacific contexts is highly desirable.
